Just Got My First Darts :) - auratus
#1
I just got back from a repticon show in GA and picked up my first darts. I'm new to them, but have done the basic research and think i picked some good beginner frogs.

They are all very young so they arent sexed, but im hoping I'll get some good pairings.

I got 5 in all.

-3 green auratus

and

-2 blue auratus

when i first started looking into them i wanted to have all kinda of them in the same incloser because i thought it would look nice. but i soon found out they dont get along.

when i was at the show i actaully thought the green and blue ones were differnt and wondered why they had them housed together, and they told me they are the same just differnt collors and you can breed them together to get some really cool colors. so i decide to get a few of both.

im planning on puttin them in my 29 gallon tank once i finish up puting everything inside it tomorrow.

all in all im pretty excited about these little guys, and cant wait till they are of breeding age.

i got a pretty good deal on them as well. got all 5 frogs, a good size bog of moss, and a culture of flys for $145.

Wecome to the hobby and congrats on your frogs.

Was this a breeder or a retail reptile distributor/store who told you that you could interbreed them? The info you have recieved from this person is not good advice.

They are (or should be) to different morphs of the Auratus species.

With advice like that from them I wonder or worry that their blood lines may already be muddied.

Please start by going through the threads here regarding mixing (not cool)and
hybrids (even not cooler). Search function on the top can get you going although this isn't a very active forum a just looking through of few pages or beginer and general discussion would have some info I would think.
Good luck

Not sure if we can say who the vendor was but I was there and they did house the green/black and blue/black auratus together. They were the only vendor who was there with darts and No, it is not acceptable to interbreed these 2 colors. They also sold these tiny acrylic boxes with a few plants and some moss for dart enclosures. WAY too small to be keeping anything but a froglet fresh out of the water in IMO.

Hmm well thanks for the info guys. I'm kinda disappinted that it's not good to keep them together. The guys selling them even assured me that the greens and the blues actually breed together in the wild and make some really cool colors so it's actually aceptable to do this... I'm kind pissed now cuz that was the main thing that I was concerned about. The shows still gong on today too so I might go swap them out for some of the same color. Are the greens and blues both just as easy to work with? Just want the easiest one since I'm new to them

Some people say the blues are a bit more shy than the greens but I have no idea. You know, come to think of it, I may have been standing there when they told you this. Was it the guy who told you that?

I have 3 D. Azureus (aka the blue ones) and 3 D. Auratus (aka the green ones) living in the same enclosure for almost 9 months now and they are doing great. We are looking to separate them in to 2 separate enclosures as they are getting close to adulthood. The blue's are very outgoing while the green's are usually very shy unless I am feeding them a few hours past their normal feeding time then they seem to be a little more outgoing.

Picked them up last year at the Daytona, FL Reptile Breeder's Expo from a very knowledgeable breeder.

Enjoy as they are great at entertaining,
Mike

P.S. If you get one that you are concerned with not eating enough try shaking a few larger fruit flies (D. Hydei) coated in calcium as the white seems to get the picky eaters jumping (pun intended).

bumping an old thread

"they told me they are the same just differnt collors and you can breed them together to get some really cool colors"

unbelievable.... what an evil ploy to take advantage of a new hobbist and make a sale.
out of curiousity, did we get the venders name?

This is an 'interesting' old thread you necro'ed....but it's probably just a trolling attempt. It just doesn't seem all that serious and/or believable.

ohhhhh, could be phil.
I could totally see that working on some unsuspecting impulse buyers though.
Interesting thread, nonetheless.
