40 breeder, plants and lighting issues
#1
Okay, I have a 40 breeder with glass top. I am going to be getting Luecs, so I know they will utilize almost all the tank. I just want to know what plants are native to Venezuela that wont be harmful to the frogs.

The tank will be 70 to 80 degrees with 80 to 100% humidity.

I also have no clue to as what lighting fixture to use.

I looked at these:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... catid=3817

Would these be any good?

Also the glass top I have has the plastic strip on it, the corners were popping up on the strip, so I trimmed like a quarter of an inch off and flipped the plastic upside down, now it fits snug. I want to drill holes in the plastic strip(small ones of course) to get some vennilation with a computer fan. Would this be okay, or if I drill holes do I even need the computer fan still?

Plenty of people have tanks without ventilation holes at all. The downside is the condensation on the front glass. The frogs don't mind the high humidity at all. I personally have a couple of 2 inch holes, covered in fine screen of course. Sometimes I cover the holes with plastic wrap. I don't find a need for any fans. People that use the fans are doing it for the plants, so it depends how sensitive your plants are to the high humidity and lack of air flow. As far as the frogs go, they don't need it. Fran

What about lights though, no one has given me a good answer on that yet.

I can't help much with lights, as I have a 20 gallon. I do know that you don't need expensive lights, like you would with a reptile. Many people buy the bulbs at a home improvement store, rather than a pet store (which would be more expensive). The lights are for the plants, not for the frogs, so you need lights for plants. You also want to make sure that they don't push your temperature too high. Have you tried using the search? Fran

I think my temp can afford to rise anyways, it's only 68 degrees in my room. I know it's not for the frogs, Im talking about what lights to use for my plants, I know 6500, but single bulb or dual bulbs? I know it's not a tall tank, but dunno what would best fit.

If you can get a bi-light fixture to fit your tank they hold 2 bulbs. You may need a different kind of set up for a 40 gallon. Some people use shop lights and hang them over the tank. Fran

That's a great deal for that coralife.

A 40 gallon breeder will need much light.

Get the adjustable mounting legs too. So you can keep the lights off the glass.

Make all the holes you want. The computer fan will create an air current which will help keep things from getting stagnant and should aid in keeping visibility on the front glass up.

So im just buying the coralife ones with legs. Pretty cheap and sound pretty good.

Be aware that in a tank that size, there is quite a possibility of females (and possibly even males) beating the holy crap out of each other. Female leucs can fight, roll , and scrap with the very best of 'em...

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Thanks Rich, I have back up tanks and temp containers just in case of this :-).

Should I just separate them permanently if this occurs?

^ ...only if you don't want your frogs fighting, rolling, and scrapping themselves to death...

On that thought ill keep em separated :-)

If they do fight, ill have to sell them to my work, i don't want a million separate tanks in my room.
