I've decided not to use a false bottom... as far as I understand, this will work, but please correct me if I am wrong...

I plan on having 2.5 inches of large pebels on the bottom of the tank and filling just under an inch of water. So the pebels will be sticking out of a 1inch layer of water technically.

Then I understand that I need to put something on top of this before i lay the dirt/soil/mud to stop it just all slowly draining into between the pebels (the mud that is)

What is it I need to put in between the pebels and the mud to stop this happening?

And how will i stop my pond area from just draining into the rest of the water between all the pebels?
