Need help with culturing Fruit Flies
#1
i have a new culture of fruit flies (melangaster) the info form with it says lifespan of 12-21 days. Ok I know after one week i should see larvae and 2 weeks after that they will hatch is that right? then i need to know a step by step routine that you do. When do i take the original flies out? When do i start a new culture. Do i use the original flies for feeding if so how many weeks into it? basically can you tell me what you do from start to finish. thanks guys

I make new cultures as soon as the existing culture starts to hatch out. Then feed out the rest over the next few weeks. By that time the new one should be hatching, and you can make a third ...

I make new cultures every 2 weeks. You can search online for Fruit fly media recipes or check some of sponsor webpages that sell FF kits.
You can also go to reptile shows and would likely be able to pic up cultures. As a last resport some pet stores sell them, but are much more expensive.

as for mixes everybody does them a little differently:
Every 12-14 days, I use 3-32oz plastic cups w/ vent lids from Josh's Frogs
excelsior from Josh or from local Micheal's Craft Store
potato flakes (1/2 cup) per tub
1 lg heaping spoon Blue Bonnet Brewer's yeast (from health food store)
1 lg heaping spoon corn meal per tub
mix dry ingredients well
liquids mix in a 2cup Pyrex beaker: 1/4 cup desulfured mollassas; 1/4 cup wht vinegar & 1-1/2 cup water, microwave for two minutes & stir
divide liquid equally among & mix well to runny applesauce consistancy, add addional water as needed (to dry and mix will FAIL)... sprinkle mixture w/ Fleishmann's Active Dry Yeast (yeast excites the flies into sexual activity) add excelsior & two 1/4 folded #4 cone coffee filters. STORE in warm place around 80-100 degrees (F) (bottom heat may be needed in Winter)

i make cultures weekly.. i like to make them weekly because they never run out. sometimes cultures randomly crash due to change in temps.
so when i make them weekly i always have cultures in various stages. so every week i wash cultures out and make new ones in the same amount.
