Death of dart froglets
#1
I had a couple of dart froglets and they both died. I cannot figure out why though. They were skinny but eating fruit flies. I would love to get new frogs but am worried that if I don't know what happened to the other ones, the new ones will also die. My terrarium is large - 75 gallons. Temperature and humidity are great, and there are lots of plants and a stream. Any advice or thoughts/ experiences would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much.

Hi,
Two questions;
Did you have two froglets in a 75 gal? And. did you get fecals done while your froglets were in quarantine?
Also, please give a bit more detail about their overall condition (age, size, species, ect.).

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Yes, I had two froglets in a 75 gal. The were both azureus. Not sure of the exact age but they were pretty young. Maybe about one inch long or even a little less. The first one that died I thought it was because it wouldn't eat. It would just knock the fruit flys off and turn away from them. The second one was also very thin, but he did eat decently. I did have them shipped from a site, so I don't know if maybe the shipping stressed them out or what.
I did not get a fecal done unfortunately. Now reading more about problems that can happen, I wish I had.
For both frogs, the day before they died they started looking pretty bad. They'd just sit in the same spot all day long and not really move, even for food or anything. The second one that died, I noticed his back legs looked atrophied a bit just before he died. Neither would take any food in the day before they died.

Unfortunately , with out having a fecal done, you may have contaminated your 75 gal tank with something contagious. If you can find any poop from them collect it and send it to a vet. The sample may not be the best, but if it is loaded with coccidia, so were your frogs, you will have to break down your whole set-up to clear it.
There are a few posts on quarantine procedures in the forum. I would suggest digging about for a bit more info before reintroducing anything back into that big tank.
Sorry for the losses.

I agreed with Rich. If they were skinny but eating and they die some must have been wrong with them internally. And if they both did die it must be something is passes from 1 frog to the other.

Also when you get frogglets they are better off in a 2.5 gallon or even smaller to control their feeding. they got to have food around them all the time + their enviroment have to be clean regularly. A good way of keeping them in quarantine is in a small container where the frogglet can be checked regularly. I like that you gave frogs large enclosures but for now they do not need it.

This hobby is a learning experience as any other one. I am sad about your froggies Sad Cry
