What pumilio morph will be the next new import ?
#1
I am going to try to stick towards the middle of this one.
That being said, I am curious to see what some guesses are as to the next "new" morph of farm raised pumilio that will be imported.

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Why didnt you get some, I never wanted to bring them into my frogroom. Then we got a chance to pick some up locally and pick them out individually. So we took it, i still didnt want any around my well established frogroom. about 4 or 5 months later my friend who i let have them all was forced to move out and i ended up with them all in the room.
Where are you expecting the next group to come from, the last one were from panama right.

who gets these "shipments"?

Are you just refering to rare morphs? I wonder how many of these morphs are just cross breed and shipped up for the masses to dish out hundreds of dollars for.

Jace, I have not gotten any of the farm raised because, so far, there is only one morph you can look at and know where it came from. I have that morph.
Locale is important to me.
These are all being imported from Panama.
Not sure what you mean by "cross breed and shipped up", Mike.

Which one is the one you can locate, Bastis.

I guess I was wondering if these morphs are being found in the wild or if they are being breed in captivity and then sold as different wild caught morphs.

Mike,
All of the pumilio imports from Panama (the only legal WC/FRed imports of pumilio from the wild) are supposed to be farm raised (when sold to the public).
That being said, I know that it would not make sense to capture WCs and then "cross breed" them to sell.
The three options are; these are farm raised pumilio without direct local info for each import, or they are WCs coming in under the pretence of being FRed, or there is a combo existing betweenst the two ( a situation that would possibly make some U.S. froggers sleep better a night???). Again, I am staying towards the middle and will let froggers decide /determine/deliberate whether they give a shite if they are from a farm or not. Bottom line is that it is always a plus to know where your frogs came from, when possible and applicable.

Rich,

Why would it not make sense to cross some pumilio to get a novel morph that would sell for more. With the prices people are paying for rare morphs it seems like someone in Panama might be interested in trying this.

Mike,
Well....what pumilio "morph" would you personally be interested in.
Much like tincs, pumilio are not to be mudded.
The more site / locale specific, the better.

Rich,

I dont have really any interesting any particular morph, I just sometimes wonder how wild all these morphs really are, or if they are a product of two different morphs. I dont think this is a new concept, I know there is concerns where many tinc morphs come from, I dont doubt there should be any less concern where pumilio moprhs come from.

I have been wondering who imports these frogs? Is there a website?

It is definitely a valid question/concern Mike. I am with you there.
There are a number of "mapped out" local descriptions and such as far as Panamanian pumlio go. Although they are far from totally comprehensive, they give a good idea of what is what.
The Tincs are another story on their own.
Here is a link to show some pumilio morphs;

Rich,

Very cool website. So these can be exported from Panama but not Costa Rica? I have been to Costa Rica but before I was into frogs.

I wonder what it takes to get a permit to obtain these frogs and bring them back. I obtained a permit in Nicaragua for red-eyed tree frogs but did not find any frogs. I know U.S. customs was not concerned with these frogs but I am guessing they would feel different about darts. I plan on going to Costa Rica or Panama in a year or two. I guess I am going to have to look under a few leaves and see what I find.

from what i Have heard, a pair of basti's can produce a wide range of patterns and colors in their offspring. Now, with how well most of these imported pumilio have been doing, I think it is very safe to say that a high number of them are actually captive breed. Seeing how most of the pumilio coming in to the public are bastis, almirante, or bruno, it is definitely a possibility that they are all farm raised. I think it is more of a paranoid crowd that is assuming they are just wild caughts. YOu can not say that these recent imports haven't had remarkably good health, and have been fairly easy to breed, which is definitely signs of a more captive breed frog. I for one think that the majority are farm raised, but it is only my opinion.

Ed,

Who gets these imports in the U.S.? Have you read somewhere about the wide range of patterns? It would seem odd if that was the case, although I guess not impossible. I could understand different shades of color but different patterns does not seem to make sense. Have people breeding these frogs in the U.S. noticed wide range of patterns from a pair of frogs?

Again, I am trying to stick towards the middle of the topic, but, it is my experience that WCs (pumilio and others) breed better than, and have less nasties (coincidence?? Less chance of them stomping around in their own infested crap.) than many CB Darts.

I think there is also a selection process that goes on with CB frogs. The strong survive. This is true in the reeftank hobby. I rather buy a culture coral anyday over a wild one.

I think there will be more yellow and white bastis within the next year. I have also heard some chatter about some d. vicenti and d. arboreus coming in. There are also some projects which could produce new imports, i.e. the project mentioned on Sean Stewart's site. As far as new imports, pumilio or other, what do you think is next Rich?
