Lot of questions ???
#1
I have a 90 gal tank I plan to use for darts, the tank measures 48x18x25 and I have a lot of questions about the setup, decor, lights.substrate, and frogs themselves so here goes the list-

1. Can you use peat moss from garden center topped with frog moss for substrate ?

2. Should I use all plants and vines or mix some wood and branches as well ?

3. Live or fake plants ?

4. I plan to buy combo fixture what's better fluorescent/incandescent or fluorescent/halogen ?

5.heat pad or not ?

6.I have a misting system how many nozzles in a 90 gal should I use ?

The set up will be for cittrolnella's.
One last question for now,not to be cocky or ignorant but rather curious as to all the protest about possible hybrids as a result of mixing in a tank, what's the big deal and why are so many people frowning on it ?.

1. Most Garden center "soils" and mixes are not suitable for our hobby as they contain ingrediants that are sometimes dangerous to frogs. I would recommend a substrate mix found at Petco or Petsmart - Ecco earth, Coco ect, instead.

2. A large size wood feature or 2 would be excellent to use, especially in your larger size tank. Make sure the wood is clean and doesn't contain anything that may be harmful to the frogs. I try to use a good size wood feature in every vivarium that I make, even grow-outs.

3. Live plants are much better. They will help hold in the humidity . Make sure you have a glass top on that tank as well.

4. Any light is fine. 6500 K is good. Home Depot, Lowes ect. I would not use Halogen - too hot.

5. No heat pad unless your house is chilly all the time - like under 65 degrees.

6. Depends on your misting system and it's particular mist output. Offhand, I would say 2-3 nozzles may be good for your 90 gallon.

Mixing / Hybrids: There's at least 12-15 threads on "Mixing" and "Hybrids". I'll try to dig one up for you.

Thanks, I read a lot of threads on the potential for hybreds coming from a mixed tank but, all seem to just point out that within the hobby it's frowned upon but does not point out specificly why it's frowned upon. I was wondering if it's more of a personal opinion matter rather than a scientific one ?

Can I put plexi around were the light fixture does not cover the screen top or should I place a full sheet of glass over tank and put fixture on top of that ?my mister is a mister moisture with piston pump.

Plexi or Plastic tends to warp or otherwise lift up and is not as safe as glass. I would get a 2 section glass cut at Lowes or Home depot - not $$ at all.

I'm not familiar with your type of mister. Your just gonna have to experiment and see what kind of coverage it produces. In any case, you'll need a hand mister as well, for spot misting.

All humour and silliness aside....Rich F made a good little movie that addresses your Hybrid/ Mixing question:

These are by no means elaborate but maybe you can get a few construction ideas from me here enclosures-setup-and-construction-f23/d3monic-s-super-build-thread-t4282.html?hilit=d3monic

While none of these are close to 90gal maybe it will help.

Funny video Phil, on the mixing, keeping your frogs seperate is another good reason to build another tankSmile.
Im not sure what the cost is, but, lexan can be used also instead of plexi, and its easier to drill than glass.
