Whats up from Colorado?
#1
Hey Everyone,
Keith Erickson here from Colorado. Hows it hoppin?

For a little background Ive been around animals my entire life, reptiles and birds in particular... I am 23 and a student focusing on zoology for now. I work at the Wild bird center in denver and... its a job... good college job.
anyway i caught my first garter snake when i was two and a half just playing in the front yard.. from then on it went crazy.. I would catch things and bring them home all the time, and keep them in drawers and aquariums hidden in my room when the parents said no.. anything from southern fence lizards, to milk snakes, to bull snakes.. and yes.. even rattle snakes.. anything i could catch. though the rattlesnakes were later in my middle school days. Ive worked with and around hundreds of species of north american bird at the wild bird rehabilitation center i help out at for the last 11 years or so. ive worked with everything from belted kingfishers, night herons, great white pelicans, to broad tailed humming birds, american robins, western bluebirds, black capped chickadees, white breasted nuthatches and a ton of other birds... basically hand me a book on Colorado birds and i will look through it to see if i can find one i have not worked with.. (this by no means entails I am an expert... far far far from it..the learning never stops)
Ive bred all the easy things just for fun starting with buying the animals and learning how to do it on my own dime from mowing lawns or shoveling walks when i was a kid, veiled chameleons, bearded dragons, house geckos, corn snakes, D.tincs, pigeons, bunnies, gerbils, whites tree frogs, hour glass frogs(hyla ebraccata) and red eyed tree frogs. been doing that since i was i dunno 15 or so?

Ive been keeping dart frogs for the past 13 years consistently and my first dart ever was a mint terribilis. ive bred D.tinc (patricia, azeureus) Dendrobates leucomelas, and O. pumilio at home.

I have been in and out of the reef keeping hobby for the past 6-7 years and well... even though i do have a reef currently i prefer frogs... considering thats what i am trying to do with myself... for the last two summers in a row i have gone down to Panama to spend several months working in the field studying various aspects of the frog Oophaga pumilio.. or as ive been confused while we were down there Dendrobates pumilio? the two years before i spent the summers in panama I spent the summer working with Dr. Kevin fitzgerald on a radio telemetry project working with Crotalus crotalus viridis.. the prairie rattle snake every night after work my brother and i would spend 4-6 hours tracking snakes and joting down data. so for the last three years ive actively played major rolls in field research projects. in Between that ive been an intern in the Denver Zoo's Tropical discovery as a zookeeper in training for two years and before that had been volunteering in pretty much all areas of the zoo for a period of 3-4 years or so.

basically... I am go go go go go.... doing tons of different things all the time all at once.. I never stop learning and its always great to find some new challenge!
