U.K Froggers here - all discusson
wolly Wrote:Hi ppl am looking at getting in to the hobby... But where do I start :? Is there any breeders near Essex. Any info on where to start would be great. I'm looking at building a viv but want to get it right first time so tips would be helpful lol.
Cheers wolly
Hey mate, well start with the obvious i guess read everything you can,and get some cultures in and learn this and be competant at it before you think about frogs.Next look at all the types of dart study the levels of expertise they require, and pick the one species that floats your boat, and is not to difficult to keep. Now you'll have some idea of what size and style of viv you will be attempting to build.Build your viv to the ent...they call em "Euro viv" design, why because the design rocks.
so there ya go buddy thats your homework sorted for a few months  .As you get in to more detailed questions you have a wealth of way more knowledgeable folks here than I to help you out with sound advice, but read, read, read mate take your time there is much to learn ha and its damn good fun too.

Thanks for the sound advice stu I like the azureus so was thinking of starting with them they seem like a good place to start.I've been reading reading and reading Confusedhock: and it starting to make sence, ill do as ya suggested and work on the flies and bits first see how that goes and then look at sorting a viv. Not sure as to what sort of setup ill go for yet looking at. the pros and con of converted fish tanks against exo terra vivs, and also weather or not to have a humidifier or a rain system and then there's plants and I don't know diddly about plants lol but I'm sure the answers will be here some where as it seems ppl on here are really helpful  thanks again a sorry in advance for my forthcoming silly qu Tongue estions.

Bro your welcome,we'll help ya out with some of the plant questions we grow loads i'll also see if we can get ya sorted with some start on ff cultures without tonnes of bloody mites ,and another thing to get going is a culture of dwarf white woodlice,we might be able to get you started personally on some of these, the woodlice take time mate so always worth starting them real early. wolly whats your first name? mate have a look at my room thread in the pics section we have illustrated a wicked method for DW woods there,it is silly effective for us here. you'll do well with azzies buddy give me time and i'll find a good breeder here, mate i know of some but the buggers all live up north
If you've thought about a question however silly it seems its not silly ask it,i definitly fall into the category of asking these questions,we can't find the answers to every thing,if we could there would be no need to have these wonderful forums Mate look into that ent design its the bomb and just works so well.I actually had a guy from erm Texas here today, yeah in the heart of the midlands  he really studied the design of these vivs, and I know we are abit of a trek from you but might be worth popping over ,one learns alot from just seeing stuff,in action as it were. Finally mate i'm a year in not in anyway experianced, but we're learning hard

hi stu names warren Smile ive been reading your frog room thread all day (FANTASTIC) didnt do much work Confusedhock: woops. i really like the look fo the ent vivs think that will def be the way i go... its amazing how much you have done i a year, and its super helpful that youve spent the time to share your progress. your frogs and vivs are of the quailty i dream of hopefully ill be able to achive a simillar standard. im only looking at having one viv to start with and was hoping to have 4 azureus in it but not to sure if thats a good idea, would really appriate any help with finding a breeder and thanks for the offer of help with sourcing ff and dwarf white, as regards to popping over that would be fantastic, cause as you said seeing it all up and running will help me understand it all that much more. im in no rush to get started with the viv,i want to do plenty of research and learn what needs to be learnt before i start building.

thanks again buddy

Thanks for the words Warren, mate you'll be better off ...USUALLY with a pr of tincs or just maybe a male high trio females can be very aggressive towards each other,The viv design is utterly worth the effort...period,and your welcome to come and have a chat, short on time mate, but we'll speak soon, just one other word of humorous caution  one viv is rarely enough...you have been warned

Lol just don't tell the mrs. I'll start with one and see where that leads me if I end up with a few the so be it Tongue been looking at the ent vivs on dartfrog. They look really good, and not too expensive, noticed that they don't seem to have the drain hole in the front though Sad and the angle of the fake floor dosent look as steep as yours does the angle make much of a difference? On I different note how's you breeding going?

All the best

hey mate, they do have a drain hole i believe,we can also build if your not into all the glass cutting malarky will save you a few quid.Mate i've kind of messed with the design a tiny bit to full fill our needs...ruddy upstart beginners huh  you have good eyes to spot this well done mate.Ok, on our first viv i think the substrate holds too much water so i modified the slope of the floor making it steeper,so giving a dryer substrate. My reason for doing this is to give the frogs a dry foot fall, many folks think a dart viv is a wet viv...its not its VERY humid but not sopping wet,we then use a fairly free draining substrate topped of with lots of whole leaves the leaf litter provides hiding and hunting opportunities for the frogs they love it,within hours of having our first frogs we were gobbsmacked by how much the utilise this resource. So it has become a fixture in our viv floors, the top layer of leaves also dry fairly quick so no problems with foot sores. We also use a bit of low iron glass for the back bit of the roof, the reason for this is it lets UVB through,so our frogs can get more uvb if they need it but also stomp about unhampered by it if they so desire at the front of the viv,so its their choice!!! This glass is called optiwhite here. Warren I'll repeat what i said earlier here I'm a year in there are folks here whom have forgotton more than i have learnt so take this into account when i'm throwing my thoughts at you.
Buddy for a couple of guys learning the ropes we have done ok we feel, honestly we hadn't really thought of breeding much in our first year, but seems our frogs didn't realise this,my commumication skills are somewhat lacking with them  ,We have had a few problems of late with sls but beyond that,we are hardly loosing a tadpole fertility seems good and froglets are adorable and growing well,no losses after morphout, providing no sls. We have panama special auratus, mysties, luecs and mt attachi bakka tinc in the water plus superblue auratus one attachi, leucs and mysties growing ootw,so yeah we're doing ok and learning hard.Honestly, more than a bit bewildered but loving it both of us
Stu
Ps oh WWW.repashy.co.uk might be useful Big Grin ...calcium plus as your staple maybe superpig and super vit as a rotation not more than every couple of weeks on the supervit

what can i say sparkys eye Tongue ive been doing my home work and is it me or is it a frog thing but it seems to me the more i read the more i want to know... id be happy making the viv myself just need to see more pic from different angles and if you could let me know the magic angle of your fulse flood that would be great... although not looking forward to the drilling bit :? but who dares wins lol.... ive noticed alot of ppl have said how important the leaf little layer is not only for the frog but also for the microfurma...and i really like the look it gives so thats a no brainer its got to be there.... i noticed in your frog room thread that you had differen ferns in your vivs are some of the native to our part of the world, i love the look ferns give to a viv, are they easy to get, grow and look after?? and with regards to plants i like the green green and more green look and although its not ideal for a viv i really like tropical pillow moss but not sure if ill be able to get that over here.
you say that your a beginner but everone always agrees with what you say, so your a good source of info for me  also found your method of makin rocks well helpfull as i was thinkin of making mine out of expandy but your way seems easier and love the heat gun trick (genius).

not sure as to what all your frog look like as still have to learn the name but ill look into it  and with regard to breeding if thats not some thing i wanted to get in to big time ( would only want a few), and if i was fortunate to have them breed could i just let nature take its course in the viv or is it a must to get the tads out and rear in a seperate viv, i know im light years away from this but am intrested to know...

sorry for all the questions but while i have your attention ill ask as may as i can

Some of this will be brief and conise as befits a knackered guy
build it mate a good skill to learn !! the drilling is a walk in the park, get your bits from "diamond drills Ebay cheep as chips..i think the guy is called Stu Leeming might be wrong
cut a persplex template plasticine moat fill with water, just the weight of the drill NO pressure sit on polystyrene clamp at all together...sorted use silirub AQ aquarium silicone great" grab" get from local glazier should pay around £3.50 a tube and a GOOD silicone gun
I think I'm running 5 cm drop over a 50cm front to back viv,so actually somewhere around 41cm (false floor) i think, might be abit out but damn close
ferns dry feet !!!! not too much light and some airflow,so not in the back lower corners and yes some natives work...polypodium vulgare is one and trickier but doable are asplenium scholopendrium, maybe Blechum spicant we are trying to grow...well we are growing some of these from spores so they are pretty much always exposed to viv conditions might be a good thing not sure yet completeely but results so far are very promising, they can be grown epiphytically, well some can
yup leaflittle is a no brainer and yep shades of green shape of leaf and stunning cloured frogs float my boat too,
tropical pillow moss maybe dartfrog...i haven't used it,but check out the epiweb moss mix as it contains ferns and moss spore again dartfrog.
Warren i want you to find out about oophaga...they are not for a beginner but as far as intank breeding its jawdroppinly fascinating, then have a look at the blocker institues..Jason and Jonah's thread for other ways to rear intank without pulling eggs of more "beginner species" like tincs.
Yeah i'm totally a beginner buddy so always check out what i'm saying frogwise with these guys whom have taught us so much as you say the learing is wicked if i learnt it all in a few years there would be no appeal just scratched the surface.Against that i make stuff,if i'm chucking a method of how to make sommit at you,i've probably found an easy way or tried damn hard to find that easy way,i work hard at things mate, but i ruddy hate doing stuff the hard way and if i make something i make it to work otherwise i jump on it and start again  I despise bad design with some passion!!!

Hi stu
Had a look at the Oophaga it crazy they way the mum keeps feeding the tads Confusedhock: and had a look at some other threads about in viv raising and as far as I can find its possible to breed azureus in viv the only difference is that youll only get one froglet ever couple of months. So this seems as if its perfect for what I'm looking for.... The only prob now is I think some where down the line in gona want oophagas but what ones I'm not decided think in time I'm gona need more vivs lol. As always thanx for the point in the right direction Big Grin

Warren another pointer on this in viv rearing malarky, check the vanzolini group and another Ranitomeyer species imitators, these sort of fit betwixt the two, we have some in tanks kids on the go another species as of acouple of days ago ie a morph of tinc,so the learning will continue

that really truly made me laugh Phil,we can't post any pics it seems because of some, erm "red tape" here,we have no pics of this event on our own forums!! The event was very very small and attendance was not as good as we hoped, but ,from little acorns, big oak trees grow.
Ben was awesome,thankyou mate!!!!!
oh and some of our frogs found new homes, better than that is all of them are doing well, every person has been in touch,so i know our kids are all ok.
I even managed to get a little lad of around 13 yrs back here a couple of weeks later, with his mum,he is the quietest of young uns,but he looks hard and cares much.............our future mate,he reminds me alot of the kid i was. He'll do right by these frogs for sure,i know it!!!!!!!!!

Ha, thanks Stu, all the real graft was on your part though. Agreed that it was fairly 'cosy' but it's a start and I'm sure it will get bigger.
