Female WAY too big?
#1
I was working out in the Dart Den when I noticed Big Moma Hauss from a side view. My jaw just about dropped! Confusedhock: She has always been the plumpest of my females and on average lays 5-6 eggs a clutch. This is just insane though.

I doubt she is egg bound because she just laid a 5 egg clutch last night or today and is still feeding several tads. Should I be concerned? I don't really feed them too much only 1-2 times a week. Should I consider pulling the male for a while or would this be detrimental because she wouldn't feed tads or lay eggs and become bound?

I could offer more laying sites as I think the tads should be morphing out any day now (can't see them but other tads in other tanks are emerging from their broms.)

any other thoughts?

Man she is huge...Sorry bro don't know enough to help but interested in what others say for future knowledge. Hopefully it is just a temporary thing for her.

Just a possibility Mike, but I know (personally, well, personally with one of my female frogs...) if one ovary is obstructed ( a number of different ways possible) the female can become egg bound via the obstructed ovary while the unobstructed ovary still lays good eggs. She does not look bloated (is there any neck bloat?) in a way caused by infection , disease, ect. but she 'ain't right'.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Is there a way to tell is she is bound? Is there anything I can do if she is? If one ovary was obstructed wouldnt she be swollen on one side more than the other or no?

I will keep a closer eye on her.

Try to get another pic of her....possibly a ventral shot when she's on the glass. I've actually seen....um...."bigger".

I'd contact a Vet - Rich's Brother, do some research on possible some kind of soak. Let me take a look at Kevin Wrights Vet book and see if there's anything in there with bloating / binding.

I'd be inclined to think along the lines of egg binding, especially since she has been laying quite steadily and now...is not.

If that's correct ^^

yea shes a egg machine. I noticed all the available film cans where full of eggs so i pulled them and replaced with a bunch of empties. I will try to get a shot if I can. She just layed a handfull of eggs for a tadpole so hopefully shes gone down a little.

Well if she is actively laying....you can rule out binding, I would think.

Would you consider placing her in a separate enclosure to "halt" her breeding status ? Just a thought.

I can do that if it doesnt make her worse. Worried that if I do she could become bound. This is the first time this issue has come up for me so not really sure how it works. Never had to research it. I will tonight though.

Once again, there are two ovaries, if one is blocked the other can still produce. One blocked and stuffing, the other OK.

I really don't have much experience with blocked or bloated frogs . I'd contact a vet Mike and grab some other pics as Phil suggested.
