hello everyone,
decided to browse this section of the forum. just how close a cousin to darts are mantella. is care similar. what about temp and humidity requirements? what about housing in general, the same as most darts? food items?
i've seen a few photos of some beautiful mantellas.
i know i can just pull up care sheets but would lreally rather hear some info from guys that have worked with them for a considerable time, say 5 years or more and what they have experienced compared to darts.
some mantellas i've seen are quite nice looking and i am curious.thanks in advance.

Hi Tom,
Some Mantella enthusiasts ( even though they refuse...I call them Mantella experts) are:
1. Devin EdmondsĀ
2. Ray C. (Stemcellular here on DD)
3. Rich Terrell. Insular Exotics - Pittsburgh.
and BTW...I just happened to entitle the subforum that....if one of those guys says that "taxonomically" they are nowhere near cousins...I'll be happy to change it. Care is similar but temps are different and crickets are the staple instead of FF. Water features are much more important too. Most are colony frogs. Come to think of it....they are WAY different.
Maybe more like 3rd cousins.

I'm pretty sure Kevin Moser has the biggest and nicest mantella collection in the world. More locales than anyone Im sure. He would be a go to guy as Im sure hes very knowledgeable on them.

thanks phil,
gotcha on the cousins. i'll keep a list of the guys you mentioned. i don't think i'll venture into mantellas because the darts keep me very busy as it is but you never know down the road. some are very pretty frogs.
appreciate the help.

Im sure he has them still. I haven't talked to him in about a year. Either way he knows his stuff and could help if he has the time.

I have also been looking at these frogs with interest, do they have any issues like PDF's with ammonia build up? My original interest in keeping frogs was because of PDF's but after reading I decided against it, that and the variety of darts was too alluring. So many different options to choose from. But the mantella's have some great options also.
