Sick frog - Help - bump on frog head
#1
Anyone seen a rounded gray bump like this and had it diagnosed? I found several posts w "what is this", but they rarely ever provide a conclusion. Noticed this a few days ago. Put the guy in QT.

It appears like a bump that orig under the skin. The light reflection makes it very hard to see in person - it shows up better w the flash.

Here is a pic

Are you sure it's "under" the skin and not...more...."on" the surface ? Is it more clear than dark ?

Well, it is prob more clear than black - looks gray w back light. I did try to gently dab it w Qtip - thought at first was something stuck on him, but nothing "wiped" off. It covers the green, so at first i thought it was outside the skin, but I then thought it could be in btw the surface of skin layers and whatever is under it - ie parasite?? caused it to fill w fluid and dilute the color?? You got me. Hoping someone had seen this prior. Any guesses?

It almost looks like the lid of the eye, under the skin has gone away and you are seeing the eye itself. Is it protruding?

I have seen something very similar to this in fish. It is called pop-eye, and is a bacterial infection the causes liquids to buildup in the head and eyes, causing bumps or bulging eyes.

I have no idea if this is something that could be found in frogs or not, but as far as I know, liquid bumps are usually related to bacteria.

I know the pic isnt the best. Actually, in person you can see his eye is fine. The bump is near the eye, but there is nothing wrong w the eye itself.

I got an email from Dr Frye, He recommended silver sulferdiazene. Once that arrives I will start treatment.

Appreciate getting your thoughts. If anyone has experience w this prior would still like to hear comments.

Interesting. I guess the good news is the frog looks healthy otherwise. Good luck!

Hi Guys

Update: Frog in photo is doing much better. The bump is about 50% smaller and there are No new bumps or lesions. I feel good about this because the first frog to get this had 4 skin bumps within 3 weeks and perished. Frog #2 as seen in photo only had one bump before I started treatment. I provided more info and photos to Dr Frye and he recommend Baytril drops and the silver cream for additional healing. Treatment has been ongoing for 12 days. The frog still has very strong appetite and is an aggressive hunter when i drop in FFs. He is in a simple 10gal QT w some paper towls, moss clumps, film cup and petri dish for water. I dont keep any light on the tank other than what is in the room.

My other Auros are doing great w no signs of any sickness.

It's good to see the bump has mostly disappeared! Good luck with him.

If I had to do it over I would have purchased a first Aid kit from Dr Frye before I actually needed it. Lesson learned.

Scott, I would caution against stockpiling meds - they tend to go bad quicker than you think. I would only purchase the exact meds needed and not a kit. Just my opinion / .02.

Update:

Under close inspection, I feel confident my P. Aurotaenia is fully recovered. He appears to have a small residual scar, but otherwise is eating well and has nice color. I put him back into the community tank w the other 2 frogs. I will continue to monitor him closely. I have ceased giving him medicine.

Special thanks to Dr Frye who was very helpful and timely with my questions and frog care needs.

Hi Scott I seem to be having the same problem with one of my citronella. Did I read that you got the needed meds FTP
Dr frye? I just noticed that the hump is turning greyish and it's on the right side behind the eye. Started as a bump and just today I noticed it turning greyish.

Help please ?

I emailed Dr Frye yesterday. Hope the meeting goes well. How did you applied the meds on the frog? And how is the med when you got it ? (pills, creams?)

Its liquid solution in small plastic bottle. I just lightly squeeze a drop over the back of the frog. Much easier when frog is in a 10 gal QT w something like a coco hut and pothos leaves. You need the frog to sit still for short moment. **Follow instructions from Dr Frye. **

Thank you Scott.

I haven't gotten an email from him yet so i might look into other alternatives soon.

I will try to get a shot or two to post them here.
