Begonia Plants for Vivariums
#1
Here is a really cool purple Begonia I picked up at the local Nursery last week. Its called a Rex Begonia. I am using it my Orange Galac viv. This species is suppose to stay btw 10-15" - I will post in a few months w updates on how well this plant is doing.

Anyone know of other cool looking Begonia's suitable for dart viv's???

I have some strawberry begonia (I know...not a true begonia) that I like. Eyelash begonia seems to be a popular choice, but almost all the pics I see its really leggy. I believe there is a rex variant called "beefsteak" that would be cool to see in a viv.

Great ideas. Thanks Field. Do you or anyone else know if frogs (ie thumbs etc) are receptive to the "fuzzy" leafs ?? I have avoided them up to now.

Some of those fuzzy Begs get big...and no....I never had my frogs "utilize" a beg leaf for any behaviour.....

Where the heck did you find that pic? timing is everything - good stuff

yeah, my Rex Begonia has smooth large leaves. I put it with my orange galacs to give them a "jungle gym". I needed something w big strong leaves that could support their weight.

I have large begonias (Rex and otherwise) in many of my tanks. They tend to overgrow, but once established can be hacked back mercilessly and seem to handle it fine. They are stronger than they look. It's funny, but I see my fat bicolors perched on them all the time, even though it doesn't look like it could possibly hold their weight.

Hi, thx for sharing, that gives me confidence I picked a good plant for my Galacs - they get good size like a Bicolor.

Any pics of your viv to share? I would love to see how its grown in esp w the Begonias.

Thx

I feel your pain - but once your settled in FL hopefully you can setup a few vivs that wouldnt take too much from your study time. Having some frogs will be good distraction to relax from cramming for exams and writing papers.

No clue what that Begonia is Phil.
I would like to state that Begonia rex and most of its progenies get quite large. Even if their leaves stay somewhat small and their height is of short stature.. they can be quite invasive.
I do not believe many Begonia would be used for egg laying for larger species... however, I believe a nice smooth leaved (Hairless) Begonia would be made use of by thumbnails and Pumilio. Also ther is a nice tall grower out there, a primary hybrid called Begonia 'Lubbergei' (B. lubbersii x B. dredgei) that does amazing in terrariums and I believe could support the weight of a thumbnail species
