Help! Sick Leuc, getting skinny!
#1
Well, I guess I'm sort of new the hobby. Back in February I got a Green Sip, had a power outage it died. Then I got another one lived for a few months, dead. I got a Leuc in April is has been fine, now it's getting skinny. It seems to miss sometimes on the flies, it used to be a great eater, now he kind of just sits in one spot for hours. I have him in a showbox with some flies and damp paper towels.

What can I do, I don't want another frog to die. Sad

please help.

1. What are your Temperatures -Day and Night / Highs and lows ? Are you lights too hot ?

2. What is the Humidity like ? - Percentage or guesstimate and what type of Water are you using ? Describe your tank/enclosure and it's lid or top.

3. What kind of food are you providing, how much and are you dusting it / how much ?

4. Can you take pictures of EVERYTHING ? The frogs, the enclosure ? Take numerous pics of everything - that will be of great help.

Thanks for responding.

During the day, I have the temps at about 72 degrees.

When I go to school it is often dry, I come home spray it down. (I have a open top with holes in it)
He is in a 40 gallon tank alone

I am giving him melanogater flies, often dusted, I started slacking in October and November.

Pics will be up soon.

Pics are going to help a lot.

Keep reading here in the meantime.

hospital-injuries-disease-and-treatments-f15/help-desk-level-1-basic-frog-fixes-101-t4610.html

Steady temps of 72 are ideal...you don't have a drastic drop at night do you ?

I'm concerned about your top/ lid and humidity. Try to spray more often asap. A full glass top is the best. You may have too low humidity.

Is your spray bottle absolutely clean - no trace of anything bad, chemicals, ect. What type of water are you using ? Tap water ? You should switch to grocery store SPRING water for now, until you get things stable.

Describe your dusting - supplements. Are they fresh ? What brand name products.

I am using distilled water, no tap. As for the supplements I am using reptivite (No D3) and Jurassic Cal callcium supplement, I trade of every other day using them. I can check what tonight what the temp is like when the light is off, it's a 40W bulb resting right on the cage. Pics will be up in 5 min

Pics are too small...

I would immediately:

1. Get a glass top cut at Lowes or Homedepot to cover the entire enclosure.
2. Buy a gallon of Grocery store SPRING water. Do not use distilled water.
3. Buy fresh supplements. Petsmart and Petco have vitamins and calcium
4. Consider a vet and sending fecal samples.

Is there anyway to save him? he is even attempting to get flies anymore? I JUST bought new supplements too... I do have springwater bottled, how do I do fecals?

Contact a Vet:

You will have to contact a Vet first. The Vet will then instruct you how to proceed and how to obtain the fecal samples.

I would also put him back into the viv. There is probably too much stress in the small box enclosure, at this late stage.

Get the top covered with glass and spray more.

All right, I put him back in viv, will work on glass top. I'll contact Dr. Rich Frye, as we both are from Chicago.

In the meantime, I would also recommend that you remove that dome light altogether. It's probably contributing too much heat and also drying out the tank.

You can stretch Saran Wrap from the grocery store over top of your screen in an emergency basis, until you get a glass top cut. You need to greatly increase the humidity. You can also pour 1/2 to a full gallon of water into your tank so the very bottom of the substrate is wet and holding water - you can then look at the sides and bottom of the tank to see the level of water and thus know that you have good humidity because there is standing water in the bottom of your tank.

Here is Dr.David Frye's email info that I have...not to be confused with his brother Rich Frye.

Thank you so much!

As for now, the little guy is in his tank. I will pour a 1/2 gallon directly into the substrate. It seems he has enough energy to move and all, I will get some fecals and report back, I can hang a light about three feet above the tank.

You have been great help, whether or not this guy makes it, you have taught me many things I will continue to use in my adventure with this hobby.

Frogs can do just fine with whatever light you have in the room and whatever light comes in thru the windows. They can do just fine with indirect light. They don't bask or desire direct light like a Reptile would. Lighting is actually more for the plants in this hobby, than the frogs.

Feed a few dusted flies every day to every other day. You don't want so many uneaten flies crawling all over everything. Loose uneaten flies cause stress in frogs.

Finally, do you have leaves or curved bark sections or other wood features from the frog to get under and hide. If there is no hiding spot, it will always have a higher level of stress. Try not to disturb or handle the frog at all. The less stress right now, the better.

Good luck - fingers crossed.

He responded.

Saran wrap is is on the top, when I cam home from school the tank was still wet, saran wrap helped. Now, I don't know if I should send samples.

By the time they get there he could be dead.

Should I still send samples? he is active just not eating very much.

You have to contact a Vet - preferably local, first. The Vet will advise you on how to obtain, package and send the fecal samples. The cost could be anywhere from $20.00 to $80.00. You have to take the first step and talk to a vet.

It would be inappropriate for me to tell you what you should do with your frog. There are people who would immediately contact a vet and those that would try to take further steps on their own first. At the very least, check the link I gave you in this thread and find some local Vets and call them - talk to them about options.

The frog is eating some dusted flies right ?

Here is a link to all the Illinois Vets....you can also email Dr. David Frye from the 2 email address also located in this thread.

Here's the link:

http://www.arav.org/ECOMARAV/timssnet/c ... ntpage.cfm

Select "Member Directory" than Toggle the "State" and select "Illinois" which is where you said you were from, right ? You'll then get a large list and you can click and select Vets by name and Illinois city.

Let me know if you still have problems with this link and it's list of Illinois Vets.
