Two tanks, Lots of questions,
#1
Hello again everyone,

So i have been browsing here once again, and have pondered the use of either of two tanks i have already, I'm open to others when/if i can get ahold of them for a good price but for now i figured i would ask if either are suitable for starting out, with modifications and what not, I'm still along way off from getting frogs, but i hope this is a good place to start, that and geting a FF culture running. In my original Greetings thread i posted some pics of a tank i got a deal on from a local store, it was under 30 dollars with a light and hood, so i figured why not. it also came with a foam insert and a pump that cycles the water from the bottom. (pics located in the link below, no need to double post Big Grin ). any thoughts on it? i considered moving my whites tree frog to this setup with a lot of added decor. He prefers to be on the ground minus when he climbs to bath in the sonic mister.

introductions-and-announcements-f10/hello-everyone-t5892.html

So, if i moved him, that would Free up my 12x12x18 Zoo-med vertical, Would that be a more preferable starting place for one, maybe two beginner darts? of should i keep eyes on something else?

any help is greatly appreciated, just looking for a jumping off point Smile

A 12x12x18 is pretty small (really small...too small for a whites) unless you are planning on a couple of vents. Even still thats a small tank. Most of the "beginner" frogs won't utilize the vertical space that much so you are looking at putting ground-dwelling frogs on a 12x12 footprint. It will be fine for a growout (at least for a while), but I would strongly consider buying a 20 or 29 gal tank. They are relatively inexpensive (especially during the $1 a gallon sales) and work great for many species/morphs.

Those smaller exoterra 12x12x18, clock out at @ 11 Gallons right ? I try to only use those for grow-out or temp tanks.

Like Field said....try for a 20 - 29 gallon size enclosure. Much better.

Petco and Petsmart both have 1 gallon for $1.00 sales twice a year usually, so even a 40 gallon for $40.00 is very nice.

lol...yep...ALL non-hobbyist's think they can get 90% of all monies back from their tank. HA.

Here's my strategy. POLITELY respond to 12 craigslist ads stating that you can only go roughly .50 cents per gallon and even then, the tank has to be in really really decent shape. Kindly inform them about PETCO and PETSMART 1 dollar per gallon sales twice a year for NEW tanks.

Out of 12 offers, you should recieve 1-2 that say.."ok".

100 gallon - I'll go $60.00 bucks because its big and an odd size

25.00 bucks for the stand.

add in a little wah wah money....and...I'd offer him $90 - 95 tops and he should be lucky you will use your gas and muscle to take it !

Finally found a tank, used 55 gallon long for 45 bucks delivered. I would like to start with Dendrobates leucomelas ( based on Philsumas' sticky). My question is now, are they climbers, or ground dwellers? I tried the search function and all i got was for sale adds Big Grin i have a few ideas for viv layout but just wanted to be sure...

Wiki doesn't help much either. Going shopping tomorrow for materials to get the viv started,

Cant go wrong with leucomelas as a first frog. In my experience, leucs will be all over the viv. They spend most of their time on the ground, but can often be found hanging out near the top of the tank. If you are trying to figure out viv-orientation, I would definitely keep it horizontal.

Leuc, azureus, tincs and auratus, as juveniles will climb a bit and "roost" at night - probably a defense against predators. But when they they get older and larger, they will spend most of their time on or near the ground.

Keep the tank in it's normal orientation and be sure to get a glass lid.

Good luck/leuc and keep us posted.

A quick look at that 100 gallon tank, it's already drilled for a wet/dry filter which is where most of the cost comes from. 100 gallon tanks depending on manufacturer can start around $600 and stand will go for around $200. I don't buy tanks unless they're around 75% less than what they cost from the store.

i laugh everyday at some of the prices people ask for their used tanks, especially the people trying to sell 10 gallon tanks for 10 bucks plus. Guess they don't know i canbuy brand new ones from petsmart for $13. I try to get used tanks 55 gallon and under for like $ .75 a gallon max
