Petco $1 per gallon sale
#1
Not sure when it's going to be but I called my local store and she said it should start sometime either May or June. I was thinking of getting a exoterra or an zoomed front opening tank but for $125 I could get 3, 40 gallon breeders which would be more floor space for the frogs. Which direction would everyone recommend?

The 40's are the better buy.

I use "fishy tanks" (top opening which I hate but grudgingly still use) of all sizes for temporary tanks, quarantine tanks, grow-out tanks, overflow, what have you. And those 40 gallons...they don't call em' breeder for nuthin' huh ? They do make good tanks for tincs, auratus, terrib breeding groups.

THAT said....if I wanted a show tank or a special viv for some special project or placement in the house....I would 110% go with a front opening tank.

Front open beats "top open' every time.

oh...don't skimp / be tight on the caishe....just save up and do 'er right. Sales are good but plan ahead and plan proper.

go with a sliding door conversion and make an aquarium a front opening viv. I have plenty of them and most are 40 breeders. Its the best of both worlds. I even have a few 40 breeders I turn on side and did it to for terrestrial frogs. despite someones comment on another board about it being a "messy " way to do it.
they look great and i built them exactly how i wanted

I have somewhere around 15 "fish tanks" set up in my frog room as vivs. Yes they are harder to work in than a front opening viv like an exo or zoo med. But you usually don't have to worry about a frog jumping out when you open the lid either. One of the advantages with a tank like the 40 breeder as that you can seperate them into two or three vivs in one tank. Really don't see much difference either way personally, and I think fish tanks are a little better constructed than either the exo-terra or zoo med vivs.
Thanks for the heads up on the $1 a gallon sale, I'm gonna start saving my pennies now.

Rusty, kind of what I was thinking with having 2 tanks in one. I'm using a 10 gallon tank now. I don't find it's that big of a deal to work with. I have about a 75%/25% cut on my glass so that I don't have to remove the whole glass. Just a quick lift up for a mist or feeding and put it back down. If humidity is too high, I simply move the front piece to come over the front lip of the top to give a bit of a gap between the 2 pieces. Gets too low, I just close it up.

I see most everyone going for the front opening. Just wanted to know pros/cons for both for more experienced people.

I was thinking floor space for my leucs. Since they're not much of climbers, from what I've read the more floor space, the better. The 40's aren't that high so gives more of a "foot print".

Eric do you possibly have a pic or 2 that I could look at with your sliding glass set up? Something else I was thinking is I could still do a front opening with the 40 instead of going through a sliding glass conversion. Do something like a vert tank with 2 doors but I all depends on what will give me the most free space. My plan is to have a group of 4 leucs in hopes to get a pair since they're hard to sex without calling. Mine are only about 7-8 months so I guess I've got about 4-5 months till they start calling...if at all.

If you look for a thread I have titled
E. anthonyi "buena esperanza" appreciation there is a
full tank shot of their viv from a few months ago. Second page I think. Its a fourty breeder turned on side so its just a bit taller than it is deep. If you pm me an email address i can snap some shots of another one and a few fourty Verts with sliding doors as well

Just wanted to let all know that the sale SHOULD start on Sunday. I went to my local Petco and the guy said that they've received the signs but haven't been told when to put them out. They also haven't gotten their BIG shipment of tanks yet.

I was just in my local one and saw the same stacks of 10-40 gallon tanks. I would assume the sale would start on Sunday.

My Petco said they will only be stocking 3, 40 gallon tanks. Good thing I just picked up 3 a month ago. No chance for me to get there at 10am Sunday morning to grab them. might go sometime next week to pick up a 29 or 2 for the vert build I'm going to start on at the end of the summer.
