Is he sick ?
#1
Hello all, I just recieved two adult powder blue tincs 3 days ago, one hasn't moved but within a 2" radius, he basically never moved from where he entered viv, and he hasn't eatin anything, as the other has been eating the day I got him and moving fine. Any answers or suggestions would be appreciated

That does sound odd. Is there good size on the frog ? It's not skinny ?

Did you contact the person that had the frogs before you...ask them questions ?

I would separate the 2 frogs....place the one that IS eating into another enclosure for the meantime, until you can get the other frog going.

I did contact him, he said he was healthy and the pic I sent he said he looked okay. After finding many reviews about him online, I would have never purchased from him if I'd a known, there from backwater reptile. The other frog is the female and she doesn't bother him, she only comes over every now n then to check on him. I'm new to the PDFs but not to reptiles n animals, so I can't say he looks bad, but he's skinnier than her, and I really notice it in his hind legs, hip area, the top is very bony, and it's how he's looked since I got him. Thank you for your quick reply, and if you still think I should separate them I will

absolutely separate them. When one frog isn't doing well for whatever reason....you want to separate it from any others.

Try to post pics if you can as well.

1. What are your Temperatures -Day and Night - Highs and lows ? Are you lights too hot ?

2. What is the Humidity like ? - Percentage or guesstimate. What type of Water are you using ? Describe your tank/enclosure and it's lid or top.

3. What kind of food are you providing, how much and are you dusting it ? What superfine powdered supplements are you using and are they fresh ?

4. Can you take pictures of EVERYTHING ? The frogs, the enclosure ? Take numerous pics of everything - that will be of great help.

Ditto on what Phil said.
Once you separate him from the female try putting a small amount of springtails to see if he will eat them, my adult tincs love them.
Also be sure both are in a non-busy area with not alot of light on them to help them settle in.
Be sure the container you move him to has plenty of leaf litter and a hide ( I use a plastic cup on its side).
Not sure if the breeder was keeping them together before you bought them but I would strongly advise fecals for both of them but when they are separated if you cannot get a fecal from the male you can fecal the female.
Just my .02.

Was wondering why I hadn't heard from anyone. I wrote a long description about everything, I submitted it but don't know where it went, so I'll write again just not so long, Viv 125gal, 48" t5 high output, 2 bulbs full sun n actinic.
Humidity is 85% doesn't really vary, temp low 72, high 80.
I use all ro water for humidifier, misting.
Substrate is hydroton, a jungle mix of soils from this website, and leaf litter, oak leaves.
I feed them springtails and flies Hydei, I use repcal brand nutrients, pink label, there are none left within a couple minutes, twice a day.
The top is glass with canopy above.
I hope that covered everything, I will get pics on and check on him when I get off work. Thanks everyone!

nothing sounds horrible....maybe the lighting is hot, especially if it is resting on the top of the glass and transfering heat directly to the tank. sounds like you have a 'fish tank or salt water' lighting set-up which is often too much light as well as too much heat for dart frog husbandry. Most hobbyist use a temp gun and I recommend the Pro Exotics PE2 with frickin' laser light to check temps everywhere - it's an awesome must have tool.

There's a chance the frog is eating when you are not looking / watching it ?

It is LITERALLY not moving - staying in one exact place ? Are you sure it is alive ?

Provide a lot of 'hides' - large size clean magnolia leaves are excellent for this as they are waxy and hold up well to high humidity and frogs can get between the layers and hide / feel secure.

Check your expiration dates on your supplements - they should have a month and year. Sometimes the powders 'go bad' thru whatever means, usually high heat or humidity exposure. When in doubt - change em' out and buy brand new supps and calcium.

I can't believe how fast you get back to me, you and this whole site are going to be so helpful to me, and I hope soon I will be able to help others as well. Thank you so much! So back to topic, yes he's alive, and seems to still have a lot of power, when I was removing him he did a lot of jumping around. So he's been in a container which most ppl cultivate springtails in, just to give you an idea of his containment. I put some springs in last night which instantly disappear to the human eye, but I'm sure he sees them. He never moved in the 2 hours before I went to bed. He is still alive and very aware, I put 3 flies in so that I'll be able to see if he eats, if not I'll remove them soon. He has turned around a bit but still in same spot from last night.
As for the other he/she has become what I expected from a frog, all over the place now, as soon as I walked in the door she came flyin down to where I drop the flys, I went n got some and she tore em up, she seems much happier with the other gone. So for seeing this I now know that they weren't a pair ever and maybe they are same sex. I'm very disappointed about being lied to from this company, I just hope the other survives.
As for tank, it is a salt light, it's mounted to canopy off the glass. When I constructed the viv I made a huge water fall system with about 7 gallons of water in it which kept the air at a perfect 76 degrees, but I had so much problems with all the pumps I tried I ended up closing it, which became this huge cave dwellings all thru the back, many hiding areas. I did that the day before the frogs arrived and noticed the temp at 87 when I got home from work, so until I get the exhaust fan in, I leave the canopy open all day and that seems to help, hasn't gotten above 80. What light do you suggest, I have live plants all thru out.
I'll keep you posted on any changes in behavior. Also how do I attach pics? Or do I just upload to my gallery, I would really like some expert advice in what you see, and maybe even be able to sex the frogs

First you will need fecals on both frogs.
Then I suggest reading up on quarantine.
Good luck,
Rich

Daman48...where do you live ? Chances are, someone here on the forum is closeby and provide more advanced help by either a quick phone call or perhaps eyeballing your viv and frogs and making suggestions. This always works wonders - members close-by.

Was just about to write here that I think he is ok, he's eating the flies and starting to move around. I live in Chesapeake Virginia. I was just reading your "cheap frog" post when I saw you said there was a breeder in Raleigh, about a 3 hour drive from me. But I'm very grateful for your help, I'm really gonna learn a lot here, my geuss is they won't be tank mates though, I'm curious as to there sex, since females are the aggressors, to me they look the same, just the one is skinnier from no food. I've read that the female will be fatter, but there both skinny, compared to same species I've seen online. I'm getting ready to add pics to my gallery, but if anyone wants to call for more detailed info, since I'm a slow typer, I'll pm them info. Thank you again

Very hard to sex most frogs visually. Calling males are the easy sex to go by, but sometimes there will be 2 males with the one being submissive and never calling.

Lots of good quality pics are necessary for sexing attempts.

anything approaching 80F is cause for watching and possible alarm.

"normal house temps" @ 70-75F are perfect.

Make sure your lights are 1-2 inches OFF the top of the glass and you would do well to get a small clip fan or other fan to be able to blow across the light fixture. These 2 methods should lower your lighting heat temps by around 3-5 degrees.

When I had looked earlier I saw no flies and he moved a bit, I just removed lid to check on him and he's moved a lot due to the the flies still in there, which I have removed and changed bedding, he's now looking way smaller than the other, should I just remove all leaves so that he sees springtails or is that a dumb ?, And is he worse than expected?

Daman48 If you want to go over your enclosure and husbandry step by step let me know. I'd be more than happy to give you a call and make sure everythink is ok. It's a lot harder to do on a forum than in person or over the phone.

Just got off the phone with Daman48. Nothing sounds out of whack environmentally. Perhaps he just received a sick frog. I think he's gonna make a good frogger though.

So, the important questions, after 18 posts.
What have we learned , pertaining to the health of these frogs? What do we still need to learn in this case?

Umm.., proper quarantine? Testing? Research before purchase? Dont throw directly into unestablished habitat?

Probably some other things but I don't have time today to re read. Also not trying to be a dick but for fucks sake this is why many states require infant care classes before you can go give birth. In my opinion if you willfully agree to take care of a living creatures you should take the responsability on educating yourself on how to do so.
