Has anyone used 4"+ PVC pipe as planters to give elevation above substrate w drainage to eggcrate below? It seems you could surround in foam but still get drainage that way. Planning my first build and could use suggestions on creating planter areas as is somewhat confusing. Clearly undrained areas in foam seem like a recipe for failure.

Yep...PVC is ideal for most all of our construction and enclosure purposes and can easily be used in exactly the manner you suggest. Just, as you say....be sure to provide adequate drainage so the plants don't root rot.

What planting mix do you use in the tubes?

I personally like to use an "ABG" mix - Spag, some orchid bark, natural commercial 'soil' from a garden center works well.
Depends on the plant as well. There is no 'wrong' mix unless it contains chemicals or fertilizers. Sphagnum is def good to use.
Search our Sponsor list here on Dart Den...there are a few Sponsors here that sell pre-made soil mixes.
