I think I have a sick Leuc
#1
Well, up until today when I finally saw which of my 2 leucs in the viv (I have 2 still in qt) was calling. All indications of size, body shape, activity ect. I thought I knew which was my calling male. Today I finally visually saw which was calling and it's not the one I expected. From what I've read and been told, males have a typical / \ type body shape and the females more ( ). Well the one that's calling was the one I had complained about not being very active and hiding most of the time. The past few weeks it's become very active and calling but has the rounder body shape

The one in question is still very active but now seems skinny. It's always had the / \ shape but now I'm wondering if it's actually sick. I did do fecal tests but only pulled one out of the tank instead of having them qted separately. I got 4 tests done over the course of month and all came out negative for parasites. My reason of thinking was that since they've been housed together since day 1, that if any parasites were present, they'd both have them. Am I correct with this assumption?

Now the other 2 that I picked up recently have had 2 fecals done and both came up positive and are being treated. Their shoe box container is kept on the other side of the living room. I'll always deal with the ones in the tank first so that I won't bring something over and when I do clean the shoe box, or even open to feed, I wash my hands right after so I'm making sure that I'm not transmitting anything.

I'm feeding 100% fruit flies since I have no springs built up just yet. They get fed 30-40 flies every other day dusted with Rapishi's calcium plus. Tank gets up to around 78 during the day and down around 72 at night. Humidity runs between 85-100%. About a week ago I changed from tap water with good drops to remove chlorine and other stuff to distilled water. I have a plastic peanut butter jar lid that I'm currently using as a pond for them that the water gets changed daily and a quick paper towel wipe out.

Any help would be great!

Fecal results can 'miss". Vet's are only human and they may miss something. There may have not be a 'shed' period when your fecals were collected and therefore an absence of eggs. Too many variables.

I am not a fan of 'small' Q-tine containers. Although I DO use plastic 'sterlite' and KIS containers...I always try for the larger sweater-box size or even bigger. That's just me though.

ANY skinny frog - separate it from all the others.

Do you use a rotation of superfine powdered supplements ? I'm seeing a trend lately, of people only using Rapashy and nothing else. See the threads here on DD re -rotation opinions.

Pics would help a lot.

Keep us posted.

Then I guess the best thing to do is to separate and pull a fecal from the suspected sick frog once a week for a month?

I do only dust with Rapashy. Was told by the breeder that it was all they use anymore since it has the calcium and all vitamins necessary for darts.

The shoe box is almost the size of a 10 gallon footprint just much shorter. it's 16"x8"x6" and have plenty of leaf litter and a hide in there for them. Need to get everything straight because I just got my 40 gallon put together and seeded with springs so hope they can move in there in the next month or so.

You are ultimately going to have to go with the advice from your Vet and exactly how and when to obtain and submit fecal samples. You could always solicit advice from a different Vet, I suppose.

There is no such 'firm' hobby-procedure on fecals....read the 3-4 posts here on that topic and opinions vary.

Same with the supplement rotation. It's essential IMO.

Ok, i just ordered some rep-cal calcium and rep-cal multi-vitamin. These are the ones I've read that you use.

I've also set up a qt tank for the one in question. Fed it in the new tank and at no problems. Still very active in the qt tank so glad it didn't get too stressed from the move.

The person doing my tests is actually a friend of mine. She's a vet tech and doesn't charge me to look at them but also has the actual vet take a look at them to see if she's missed anything. She's the one who caught the eggs in the 2 I just got, so she does know what she's looking for. I'll get a hold of her tonight and see if she can take a fecal tomorrow. I'll let you know the outcome when I hear about it.

Stress on its own, without anything 'internal' may cause some noticeable weightless. Sometimes males tend to look thinner as well, especially when in 'breeding condition' and around an active female.

You may be worrying for no reason. Just continue to feed heavily - also consider some larvae for packing on some extra calories. Depending upon the age of the frog, it may even be going through a growth phase.

I would not use distilled water for a 'pond'. If it frog sits in distilled water, the imbalance of the water, distilled water being so pure....it may actually leech nutrients from the frog.

If you are worried about your 'local city water' ...I'd just use grocery store 'spring water' and not distilled.

Update

Ok, my little ones are now on a rotation of supplements.

Doc did fecal and found nothing. Asked me to bring the sick one in so he could observe him for a couple days. He does snakes and turtles quite often so he wanted to get into the frogs as well and wants to buy some from me once I get some offspring. Such a great vet! Not even charging me for anything anymore when it comes to the frogs. Charging me an arm and a leg for looking at my dog though Smile

I've ditched the distilled water and now on spring water. Let's see how things look in a couple more weeks.
