Multiple clutches- can pumilio raise them all ?
#1
Approximately 2 weeks ago my mancreeks laid their first clutch in over a year, a big one too, 10 eggs. 7 of the eggs were fertile, and as of last night, only 3 tads were still on the leaf. Three days ago however, before they started transporting, she dropped another 10 eggs, that all appear to be fertile. I actually got to watch her lay, and him fertilize them, which was pretty cool.
My viv for them is a 24 x 24 exo. It has no broms, just film canisters, 10 or 11 of them clustered at different elevations. I'm wondering if I should add more canisters? Realistically I don't see her being able to handle feeding that many tads...or could she? Will they even transport from the second clutch when they have 7 (?) others going? What I'm kind of afraid of is that if I add more, and they do transport, then whole lot would suffer, where if I don't give them more canisters, and they don't have places to deposit then maybe it would be more "manageable" for the female?

Hope my questions make sense...

hmmm...VERY good question Derek.

I've had eldorados 'double clutch' on me, but they are a bit bigger pum that those man creeks. Hard to say what will happen. I'd add a couple more film cans at different locations and let nature take it's course. What will be, will be.

I will say that in my experience, pumilio preferred broms to film cans hands down and I think I got 'better production" and raising from the broms- even though I usually lose 40% or more broms eventually.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Going without broms was intentional on this viv. When I built it I had read a thread regarding the use of broms vs canisters and the statement being made that they will utillize whats given. I wanted to play with it a little, and see what happens.
I kind of credit these clutches though to one of your posts Phil where you recommended "shaking things up a little". about a month ago I did some heavy pruning, took some plants out, added some others, and shifted the canisters around, looks like it workedSmile. I'll add a bunch more and update with how they do. Mainly, I'm worried about the health of the female first (if she tries to feed them all) and second the tads, that maybe the eggs she deposits would be "deficient" in some way.

I only wish my eldos would get going, as much as my male calls, he aint gettin' any lovin though...

Cool Derek,

Yeah...going a whole year without any breeding ? A whole new viv or new partners comes to mind. Amazing how 'new' things gets them going. Some say it's stress induced breeding, as in 'oh noes, the end of the world is coming" but I dunno.....it may just be a plain ole' fashion shake up does the trick and kicks em into gear. Interesting none the less.

Feed em heavy dusted FF while they tend /raise. Good fresh sups and calcs....and a rotation.

It was a rough year...Sad
Long story, started with a bad frog sitter experience, followed by a busy work schedule, followed by baby...
Getting back on top of things nowSmile Feels good to see them laying again. After my sitter issue, I had to kinda nurse them back and took things easy for a while, I got extremely lucky I didnt lose any. Not making that mistake again.
Pretty much, I think they all went 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, no feeding, no misting... I about crapped my pants when I got home from vacation. I had probably 30+ cultures sitting there looking like they hadent been opened and 15-20 gallons of water sitting there unopened.
They were thin, but alive. I had the sitter over 3 times, going over feeding, misting, labled the tanks with the quantity, and type of frogs, which tanks to watch for "escape artists" etc... I thought he was a pretty responsible guy, not a kid, and someone we had known for years. I felt good when I left, called several times to check in and see how it was going. I knew he wouldnt do things the same as I do, so I still fed the heck out of them before I left. Lesson learned.

Back on track....with an update.
I loaded up the tank with film cans. Up to yesterday, I thought that they let the second clutch go, didnt transport any (had 10 good tads on the leaf, which was "tough" to watch"). Yesterday I had somebody over, showing them the tanks, and, low and behold, he was transporting a tad from the second clutch. I know he didn't grab them all, you could see some dead ones on the leaf, but he grabbed some. And, if that wasnt enough, another clutch of 10 got laid Tuesday.

There is only one tad in a canister that I can see, but, I've caught her coming out of several others that I can't see down inside of. Pretty crazy. Unlike my darklands. if they have tads, thats it, no clutches.
