I'll have to see if I can get some updated pics soon. On the whole, I've had no trouble growing most everything and keeping color on broms (or on most cases, gaining color on broms) under the LEDs. One other thing to throw into the equation beyond power savings, is that T5 bulbs are supposed to be replaced at least annually, while LEDs are spec'd to run 10+ years without replacement.

I know replacing bulbs can be a nightmare, especially since I would have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 or so to replace.
I really appreciate the info. I think if your getting good color from the plants that is good enough for me. You just don't really see many people who have a setup like yours over their tanks. Thanks again.

Hey Chuck, can you give me your thoughts on using 6500K and 4500K as color choices on the LED's? I am about to order some supplies but your blog mentions using 10K and 6500K so I wanted to be sure before I ordered.

On my second batch I did 1/3 each CW/NW/WW (10000K, 6500K, 4500K) --- still on two dimmers, with the CW and half the NW on one, and the WW and the other half of the NW on the other, so I can adjust the look. I can't tell any difference in growth between the two setups, but the general thought was that each color temp of LEDs has a different spectral "signature" (not just the overall color temp, but frequencies they spike and dip in, etc.), and that the more variety I had, the better it'd generally cover the various chlorophyll response spectrums for the plants. To be honest, I don't think the plants care; I like having the mix so I can adjust the rendering to my tastes (CW is too blue, NW and WW too warm for me), but outside of that the plants would probably do fine just with CW if a person didn't want to mess with it.

Thanks Chuck, I just wasn't sure if going with the 6500K and 4500K would be too yellow and not pleasing to look at or not. I will just get some extras so that I can do what looks best.

I may have misread the question :-) If you're considering 6500K and 4500K only (no CW), that would be way, way too yellow for me (can't speak for the plants). If possible I'd lose either of those in favor of 10000K -- with that and either of the others you should be able to get a reasonable look with dimming drivers.

Yes, I was not planning on using any 10K until I re-read your blog. Hence why I was inquiring about it. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer! I think I will get all three and mix it up a little.

Also, FWIW, if you're ordering from Aquastyleonline and really want three colors on a kit they only offer in two colors, I just made a note in the order comments on mine, and they were happy to do three colors instead of two on my order...

lol... Therein lies a story.
The short version is that I'm having another house built, and will be moving again in late August or September. The good news is that I'll have a bit more room in Frog Room 3.0, but in the meantime, I've not done anything dramatic with the existing one. I did add two new Ghost Vivs in the past week or so, and have another two coming any time now, but outside of that, it's mostly maintenance. |
