Hello everyone! My name is Alex and I am currently in San Antonio Tx. I have been lurking the past couple of weeks and really trying to read as much as I can. This would be my first adventure into amphibians, but I have kept snakes, and currently I have a 2.5g reef setup. So far all of the information I have found on this board has been great! So thank you all! Since I am extremely busy during the fall I will most likely not be able to build a viv until around Jan/Feb. so in the mean time I will be researching as much as I can, and perhaps finding equipment. I have ordered two books, which should be here on Friday. From what I have read so far, I am thinking 29G tank with 2 blue dart frogs, and the rest is up in the air. Is a 30 Breeder tank not a good idea? Dimensions are 36x18x12. Look forward to getting everyone's feedback and helpful knowledge when I start putting everything together.

Welcome Alex! I also lurked and took my time, reading and reading some more, there is a lot of preparation before jumping into DFs IMO. But you (and your frogs!) will benefit from this. By blue DFs, do you mean azureus? 29 or 30 gallon would be good for these, plenty of room. Azureus need more of a large footprint, as opposed to a taller tank, because they are more ground dwellers. I have azureus, and they don't go up in the tank, but they are all over the ground, so 36 x 18 x 12 is great, IME.
Lots of helpful froggers here, I imagine you will get lots of information and suggestions. You are lucky to be in Texas, tons of people there and they have meets, etc, every so often. I realize San Antonio is pretty far south, but I think you'd be driving distance to some members.
Good luck with your frogs!

Hi Alex and welcome to Dart Den.

San Antonio may be a tad far, but you should really try to attend the upcoming Frog Meet near Dallas. You will come away amazed at all the fellowship and animals, supplies, knowledge shared at these frog meets.

Please enjoy yourself here and post often.

Thanks Diane and Phil! I do mean Azureus.

@Phil, I would definitely make the drive up there if I could, but I work in College Football, and we have a game that day. I won't be able to really do anything until the season is over.

I'm in Austin and I just got into the hobby at the start of the year after lurking here for a few months. I have two azureus that started breeding this summer - dozen tads in the water! DD has been a great source of information for me and the members have been super helpful and responsive when questions come up. Good luck and welcome!

Kind of the reason I actually pulled the trigger to start keeping these awesome little guys!

Yesterday I went to some stores to price some things out. Needless to say, pricing turned to buying! I bought my tank, which is a 40B, an 8QT bag of eco-earth to cover the foam background, and 2 round cork wood pieces. Also going to be looking for some other wood pieces to put in. I received the two books I ordered, which compliment each other nicely. They are: Poison Dart Frogs (complete Herp Care) by Amanda and Greg Sihler and then Poison Dart Frogs: A Guide to Care and Breeding by Jason Juchems. Once I actually start working and building the vivarium I will start a thread somewhere with the details. Thanks again everyone!

Congrats Alex on your purchases! It is SOOO much fun to build the viv, and think about the frogs who will call it home! I am excited for you! I have my 4 vivs with frogs, and I also have 3 vivs growing in. 2 are big, permanent vivs, and 1 is a grow-out for babies. Every day when I mist and check the plants and bugs, I think about the one-day-in-the-future-inhabitants, how exciting!

Thanks Diane! I just have to keep my excitement contained, so I don't rush this! Good thing I have some patience built up from my Saltwater habit!
