20gal Long?
#1
Do any of you use the 20gal longs? I feel with soil and a drainage layer there wouldnt be enough height for any species? Idk, i snagged one from the petco dollar sale and im not sure what to use it for. Any opinions?

Im interested what you guys use these tanks for.

Thanks!

I use 20 long tanks. I use them for smaller ground dwelling species like P. vittatus and I use them for growing out froglets. I also have one that I use for communal tads, Phyllobates, Epipedobates, etc. I keep the false bottom prettly low, only a couple of inches. If you plan out a background with thought you can give the frogs places to climb and rest on the background.

Good thoughts Rusty, i also considered making it a really tall vert.
I am very confident i could make a nice elaborate background to maximize the space given.
Definitely would try and focus on a canopy type effect.

Ive actually never considered getting P. Vittatus. Do you work with them? How do you feel about them?

Could also work as a nice QT tank i suppose.

Any other species you would recommend for it? More than likely i would only be housing 1 frog. Maybe two but more than likely just one.

Exactly what i was thinking. Ive been doing some research and it seems the 20 gallon long is well practiced for terrestrial species. I come from starting out with imitators and then my second species being pumilo ( i do not have them yet but anxiously awaiting lol ). So naturally i feel like i need a significantly higher amount of height. I am actually pretty excited for a big frog. Haha!

I actually have quite i few new tanks in store. Several i am using to test my design for vert kits. Hopefully the business will be up and running within a few months. I am planning on running a bunch of picture contests with the reward being a free kit shipped. Maybe you could help me host and judge such a thing. I really just want to help fellow hobbyists with affordable - quality kits. Anyways, i am digressing.

Did some research on the P. Vittatus and they seem like some really cool frogs. Bold and active according to my research. Maybe ill bother Rusty for a couple froglets when he has some. Exciting stuff. Glad to hear this tank wont be a waste. Have you had any experience with them phil?

Thanks for the advice!

Vitattus? Yep...I had a large colony of @ 10 that bred often. I transferred them to a young man in the Baltimore area @ a year ago. One of THE best colony frogs hands down. Colourful and very nice series of calls. Females even make noises.

I would go with a 40 gallon breeder - non vert.

P. vittatus are an awesome frog!! Beautiful, maybe a little shy at times. They have a really nice pleasant call. Easy to hear but not too loud. I have a group of 5 adults in a 20 long and they get along great. I seem to have at least one froglet morphing out every week, love raising them in a communal tad tank. It's neat to watch them swim around as tads and then one day see them as a fully morphed froglet sitting on a lilly pad on the waters surface. Come down and hang out with me in the frog room anytime, we'll have a blast.

Haha absolutely Rusty, i have 3 vivariums in the works right now so once i get this 20 long done ill take a cruise out. Maybe, purchase a couple froglets while im at it. As it looks now, i will be attending the next scott smith expo out in wheaton and spending a pretty penny....... and i love every bit of it hahahaha. Definitely looking forward to seeing your collection. Ive seen Richs and Demonics frog rooms and im always impressed / full of envy lol.

That communal tad tank sounds awesome, definitely looking forward to seeing that. Gees i really didnt know what i was getting into when i built my first tank. Now i have 2 racks and lots of frogs in the future! Hahaha.

Casper just shared his communal froglet rearing 20L setup which I copied. I added a really short FB - only 1" tall. I kept the substrate relatively low up front and sloped it higher in the back. I only used black shelf paper to black out the background. I used a couple of medium sized broms (which now look giant) placed in the rear of the tank and a few cuttings from more diminutive plants in my main viv to keep the scale looking right. It's a different look, but I think it will work out well for my purposes (azureus froglet rearing).
