Laying Dendrobates leucomelas !
#1
My pair of leucs have been courting for the last week and my femle laid eggs last night. She laid 5 eggs on a staghorn fern plant and ate one of them! they were still there this morning and i saw her checking on them once before i left for work.
the pair is a very young pair so i was wondering how long should i wait to remove the eggs from the tank? the male is very shy to come out sometimes.

hey there

wow, i forgot all about posting this.
well, my pair are doing great! they have laid 3-4 clutches of eggs since the first ones (the first clutch did not make it) and i have 8 tads in the water right now. they are almost ready to sprout legs. i'm nervous about them b/c i worry about if i have done everything right and the threat of spindly leg scares me to death! so im very vigilant about them and read everything i can to make sure im caring for them correctly.
The pair are about 1.5 yrs old. the male sings alot. i purchased another male to put with them (this was before i realized i had a pair) but he has never sang and is at least 2 years old. he is still in qurantine, but will be added to the pair shortly. there are photos in my gallery of them.
how many leucs do you have and how old are they?

Is he definitely male then? I've got a recording of a Leuc calling on my mobile which I've been playing to my pair every now and then to see how they both react. The male (which I knew was male before I started doing this) always calls back straight away, my other one (which I'm hoping is female) never calls but becomes very alert by it. The only thing is I'm not sure on her (?) age, all I know is that it's at least 10 months but I'm not sure at what age leucs start calling?

hi otis

yes, im 99% sure the 2yr old leuc is male. he is shaped just like my other male and has big toe pads. he is very outgoing. my female is very rotund most of the time and even when she is a little thinner after laying eggs, you can still see her shape is different from the male's. the reaction you observed is exactly what my animals do. a friend of mine used to play a recording off his cell phone to my leucs (this was before they started calling), and they reacted the same. my new male still has not called, but it may be b/c he is still in a quarantine container (maybe he doesn't like panacur? ha ha) i am curious to see what happens when i put him with the pair next month after treatment. My leucs started calling at about one year of age. thats my female on my avatar. let me know if you have any more questions. oh, and my tads are doing great! sprouting front legs now! WOW! ~Lauren

can you send the sound files mobile to mobile?

I'll just have to wait and hope she(?) doesn't start calling. I'm not getting a good idea from body shape with mine though, my male seems to have larger toe pads but he has a very round body i think he might be a bit over weight!

the frog in question does seem to look like a young female. if you can post pics of her sitting, it might be easier to tell. very pretty markings. your male reminds me of how fat my female is. my female has large toe pads like my male! its kinda weird. i need to post some pics of their tads that are about to completely morph out.

oh, and the pic of my female leuc on my avatar was when she was about 6 months old. her shape is different now since she has matured.
