Bastimento Tank - Pics
#1
Just thought I would post up my new tank that will host my trio of bastimentos. The tank is a zoomed 18x18x24 with a cork stump. No silicone or adhesives are holding the cork together. There will be a 60mm cpu fan for internal circulation. There are "pads" of clay in the back where you can't see. In the back right corner there is a spring tail culture made inside of a vertical cork round and capped off with a piece of tree fern. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks! Well the tank is only been planted for 24 hours. But you know how fast those fireballs grow... ;p

Very nice. That's pretty much the way I'm doing all future tanks. All cork other than the wood I've already acquired, one type of brom, and no backgrounds.

Really like the spot and way you chose to mount the fireballs.

Thanks, i think fireballs are great, they're colorful (if they have enough light), hold water well, and stay relatively small. Most of all they are usually cheap. I probably spent less on all of those fireballs than 1 cheap 'designer' bromeliad. Sticking with one or two types is good because to many different kinds gets very distracting.

How about you take some pic of the frogs! Great vivarium I love the no background and cork like you and Ray have been using a lot.

I really like the cork stump as well, thanks for posting.
I have been thinking about this type of layout myself lately.

Crystallized or anyone else who knows,

Can you tell me where I can find this type of cork? (not just round, but stump looking) I have only been able to find rounds in my searching...

The "stump" is actually made of rounds held together with bamboo skewers and the gaps were filled in with sphagnum moss, giving the illusion of one piece.

Great looking viv! The mention of the springtail culture interests me as this sounds like an interesting idea. Is the culture accessible to feed it or how are you keeping it going?

Thanks

Its essentially a feeding spot for microfauna that is inaccessible to the frogs. Just a cork round capped with a piece of tree fern.

I was quite interested in your viv with all "natural" elements, so I built one myself--see my pic above. No foam, glue, etc, just various pieces of wood, cocohuts, pods, etc. I really liked your idea of the springtail culture, so in the back right, there is a tall bamboo round--it has a springtail culture inside it! We'll see how it goes! Thanks again for all the ideas!! I will be adding frogs tomorrow.
