Azureus or Leucomelas good to start with ?
#1
Ok , been reading and reading then more reading, it seems that I need to pick frog first then build a viv for their needs. So I think I like the Azureus or the Leucomelas( hope I spelled that right). Any suggestions would be great, or special viv needs.my viv is 24x18x36

That a 'high' or tall tank right ? Dimensions clock out at @ 67 gallons ?

Dendrobates tinctorious 'Azureus' and Dendrobates leucomelas are both excellent choices - easily available and not $$. Very hardy, bold and can be easy to breed and raise.

Back to the enclosure. Both those species are considered to be more of the 'terrestrial' type of dart frog, especially when they get older and more heavy bodied. Not that they won't climb, but if you had to put a percentage on it, they would utilize the horizontal more than the vertical.

Can you post a pic of your tank ?

Not yet, my tank is in route as I type, still looking at pictures of others trying to get a nice set up. Still a little confused by this water thing. do I need standing water, flowing water, where do they lay eggs etc..

From what I been reading don't mix the two, and the Azureus females can be aggressive?

correct. Start out with a single species tank. Females can be aggressive and demanding. A good sex ratio for Azureus is 2.1 or, 2 males and 1 female.

You do not need standing water, ponds, waterfalls ect. you need a glass top covering @ 90% of your tank's top and spraying by hand every day or other day or so is fine.

You can buy 'coco huts' and leaf litter to lay eggs on. Live plants with broad leaves are also used as well as bromeliads.

yep..hand mister, brand new. Buy a $15-20 dollar one at Home Depot or Lowes. Pumpable hand spray holds like a 1/2 gallon.

Boss Frog, Phil has some great information! I know he has definitely helped me in my viv set-up. I just started as well, and going through old threads here has helped a lot! I went with a 36x18x18 exo terra viv. If I were to do it again, I would have gone with 36x18x24 because substrate takes up so much space. I was also choosing between Leucomelas and Azureus. I really wanted Leucomelas because I liked the fact they could be kept in groups without too much female on female crime  But I also liked the color of Azureus. I chose Azureus darts because my wife wasn't to keen on the idea of having the Leucomelas calling loudly while we were sleeping, since they are right next to our bedroom. I didn't think they would be that loud, but on some threads people described them as loud as a canary or parakeet. My mom has a parakeet, and they can get pretty loud. Whether this is true or not, I'm not sure, as I am a beginner and have no first hand knowledge, but maybe someone can chime in. Also my wife really loved the colors of the Azureus, and when she's happy, I'm happy  Eventually though I plan on getting them when we have more space. Good Luck and have fun!

I'm a noob and debating the same 36x18x18 tank -- Considering the size of the tank, is is possible to have more than 2 males and 1 female? Perhaps 3 males and 1 female of Azureus? What's the max number in a well designed enclosure with ample hides for Azureus?

As a new hobbyist, I would recommend starting small with a single pair, (1.1) - 1 male and 1 female. Things are so much easier that way, as aggression is sometimes hard to catch and you minimize it but starting with a smaller amount of animals.

Thanks! If I'm just starting out with two, would you still advise going with such a large enclosure? Does it make sense to go smaller with just a pair?

I'd personally go with a 20 gallon size tank as my first tank recommendation. Both you and Boss have some of the the larger, higher-end viv's and that's fine too. They will take a lot more effort to hardscape and plant.

Back to the frogs....you have basically a 50 gallon size enclosure. You could go with 2.1, sure. You also need to decide if you are going to purchase froglets and grow them up yourself, or spend @ 200% more for full grown sexed and/or proven adults.

Adding all frogs at the same time and providing lots of plantings, visual barrier and hides will be best, as they will acclimate and seek territories all the same time.
