Diane's frogs and vivs

Trying to figure out how to put pix on here. Bear with me! If this works, this is my female proven leuc. She appears to be full of eggs, her mate calls and calls, they spend lots of time in the cocohuts, but.....nothingSad

My first morphed out baby imitator! Now taking small ffs. And my rack, just put together a week ago. Before that, I had vivs sitting all around the living room. I love having them all together now!

Thank you Jim! It's nice to finally be able to post pix. Stan surprised me with that new viv last week, as an early Xmas gift! Then over the weekend Petsmart had a sales event, so I exchanged it for a 18x18x24, and got money back! Cool! I'm not sure which frogs I will put in there, but am thinking of trying your new build technique, with that pink stuff and drylock.

Nice bump. I missed this the first time around. Looks great, Diane. Did the Leucs ever lay? They can be stubborn little buggers!

Thanks for asking, Jim!
And Glenn, I must have stubborn little buggers! I bought the leucs last summer as a proven pair, and once I got them home they laid once--just jelly! Now for the past month they have been courting lots, and in the past 2 weeks they have again laid........jelly. I am suspicious that they may have some eggs hidden, cause they have laid jelly on a leaf, and in the cocohut on a petri dish, and I also see them frequently go courting under the base of a brom in their tank. Hoping they've laid real eggs somewhere!
I post pix so infrequently that I always have to figure out how to do it again, but I have some pix I will try to download tonight!
Overall my collection has grown a lot since I started over a year ago, and I have been successful with my imitators (Cainarachi Valley) several times, and just yesterday I got auratus eggs for the first time! Very excited! Lots of courting from my leucs, and possibly (hopefully) my azureus?! I have quickly growing cobalts, vittatus, azureus, and a couple of extras that I may want to breed in the future.
Overall, I am very happy with my little collection, and they give me many hours of enjoyment every week! I sit on my little step-stool watching them every day. Stan has also fallen in love with them, he adores the azureus but his new favorite is my little oyapok girl who is out JUST as much as the azureus. Every few days he tells me we need to find a boyfriend for our oyapok girl! He loves the highly visible, bold tincs, yet he tells me I need more thumbnails, he prefers these, I think it's probably because they have bred effortlessly for us.
Today my grown daughter, Kate, asked me how many frogs I have now, and I had to stop and count! That's so cool! My answer was 23 or 24, plus 1 tadpole, plus new eggs. Wow! A year ago I never woulda thought! Nothing addicting about this hobby, huh???

Diane,

You may have 2 females Leucs - one that stomps /and or eats eggs. Eggs are laid first and then the male fertilizes them ('jelly"). Females do eat competing females eggs...

I have seen him call, with the impressive throat-sack, many many times, so he is a confirmed male. Thanks for the response, Phil!

Are you sure you have TWO males ? Your signature lists your Leuc group as : 2.1

2 males
1 female

You could easily have 1 male and 2 females and that may explain you lack of eggs, as the one female is dominant and eating them and could also explain your huge egg-bound female - the dominant female is denying her access to the only breeding male.

Some thoughts

As Phil said the females will eat each others eggs, I caught one female in the act, a small spot leuc grinning at me with slime hanging out of her mouth. The fix is to pull them when ya see them.
I am also thinking a 1.2

Congrats on the breeding!

Positive. I bought the proven pair a year ago, and have seen the male call many, many times, with throat-sack huge. Then, a few months ago, I "saved" a group of starving frogs from a good samaritan, one of which was a leuc, supposedly a female. I put that one in a QT next to the tank of my proven pair. Lo and behold, my pair would be courting, calling and calling, and I started hearing "dueling pianos", so to speak. I look, and the starving "female" leuc is a male! Growing well, filling out well, and calling to beat the band! Throat sack of a male, for sure!!!!

This brings up another question, for those of you with leuc experience. My original "proven" pair that haven't reproduced in a year--should I remove the male, and put in my newer male? It seems I have read on here that when a pair isn't producing, switch them out, and they may do well together. What do you think?

regardless of the ratio then, I'd take one of the 'males' out of there and see if that egg-bound female can breed and get some relief. You have some 'odd dynamic' at work with those three frogs and someone is the 'third wheel', so to speak. Probably inadvertently caused the 'skew' when you added that third frog. Sometimes social balances are....tricker than we think.

Frogs are like people...sometimes they just don't 'like' each other.

Phil and Beth,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful replies, I really appreciate it! Tomorrow morning I will switch out the males, and see if the female can finally lay her eggs!
Phil--I must have mistated, they are NOT all 3 in the tank together--the original pair is together, the 3rd wheel (extra male) is in a 10 gallon QT next to the pair's 22 gallon (Exo Terra 24x18x12) tank. Sorry for any misunderstanding!

Thanks for posting Diane! It's great to see how your collection has grown, and it's wonderful that you've also been taking in rescue animals! I hope your experiment with the leucs goes well - you will have to keep us posted Smile And I hope Stan get's his wish with a buddy for your Oyapok!
