Hello, everyone. I have been keeping several types of PDF's for a couple months now. I aquired several animals from one gentleman, out of desperation, as he had croaked a few and I believe he was tired of feeding them. Sad story, but gave me the opportunity to jump in.

I have had a great interest in frogs for a couple of years. I also have too many other interests, Tanganyikan cichlids, high end L# pleco's, panther chameleons, that prevented me from having the necessary time to give to dart's. Sold the last of my panther babies and aquired a quad of phyllo bicolor(which have given me over 25 eggs in the last couple of weeks) from one seller. The other seller mentioned above gave me an assortment, leuc's, auratus, azureus. Most were skinny, but are gradually putting on weight.

I had been surfing the DB for weeks before, absorbing as much info as I could. It was not until a week ago, that I found dartden.com and realized that there was more to frogkeeping than DB. I kept hearing about "Rich Frye" lines of frogs, but had no idea who he was until I found this forum. I almost took as gospel that everybody selling frogs on DB, must be reputable sellers...anyways...

I must say that in the last few days, I have learned an amazing amount of information. Besides the excellent info and input on husbandry, health, and viv design, the biggest thing I have learned is valuable information about who I could and who I could not trust in dealings. As my passion for these animals grow, I find myself wanting to keep thumbnails and pum's. Most of these animals come at a premium, which rightly so they should. I have plans to purchase in the coming months, and information I have gained here has helped me avoid near disasters I believe. I had been asking questions of one individual, whom I thought I knew a little about(but was wrong...very wrong), about the purchase of some pum's. I had met this person at a local herp show also. What I knew of him was just the tip of the iceberg.

I find it extremely refreshing that here on dartden, people are allowed to have discourse that does not follow extreme levels of decorum or overly PC. I am kind of a no-bullshit person. I want the straight answer and if somebody received the shaft or was deceived, I would like to hear about it. I have a suspicion, well, more than.., that DB is pretty heavily moderated and may have the tendency to protect reputations, even though they should not. Not trying to say, "this place is the shit, and the others suck" by any means. I have gained, and will continue to learn valuable info from both...BUT, I find that this place has offered me far more valuable insight versus just the scratch the surface type stuff. A bit of the Wild West, if you will...for those seeking expertise, advice, and honesty.

Just wanted to say I am glad to have found this forum and look forward to gaining knowledge from it.

Thanks, dartden.

Hi, welcome, didn't catch your name.
I'm glad you seem to be over the misconception.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

My name is Jason. I live near Des Moines, IA. Thank you both for the greeting...and for the enjoyable reading here.

I work in the medical field as a sonographer, and am a newfound addict for this hobby. Have always enjoyed reading about these animals and looking at the amazing varieties and locale-specific variation, and it's an absolute treat to start working with them. Have always had strong opinions about keeping strict bloodlines, am against mixed tanks, and hybridization(all three pertaining to cichlid-keeping), but realize that it may be even more important in this frog hobby.

I did not even begin to appreciate how big this hobby is in the U.S. I know of a couple other froggers within an hour of me, but had no idea how many forumites were here. With such a large amount of hobbyists, I can now appreciate how big of a deal(with the $$ involved) it becomes with the imports of highly desirable frogs...and their possible misrepresentation or poor QT or legality, and the list goes on...

Lots of good reading here. Like I said, I have learned LOADS in a week and I think I am just getting started.

Thanks to you both.

BTW, may I contact you in the future, Rich? Chicago is not that far from Des Moines and I have driven further for ugly, little catfish that live and breed in caves.

Hey Jason - welcome! I'm 1 year into the hobby and like you I found the openness of DD refreshing and helpful!

What Tangs are you keeping? I have shellies mostly - multi's, brevis, gold occelatus, and caudopuntatus. I also have a group of S. lucipinnis that emerge at feeding time like a hoard of locusts then disappear back into their caves not to be seen until the next feeding. I have two compressiceps (Chaitika) that are the slowest growing fish I have ever kept Wink Anyhow, welcome and glad to see another Tang addict making his way into the dart hobby!

Welcome to the board Jason. Shoot me a PM if you're ever planning on being in the Twin Cities area and we can meet up for some beers and frog chit chat. I got 10 gallons worth of ingrediants sitting next to me just waiting to be brewed.

Thanks for the welcome, everybody. Pretty cool forum here.

@Jim from Austin- I have kept lots of Tangs in the last few years. Have bred several types of fronts, kept about 10 types of tropheus with Ilangi as my favorite, and have worked with lots of lamprologines. Kitumba jumbo cyprichromis were a favorite also. In the last year or so I have shifted my primary interest into L# pleco's, keeping L46, L260, L262, L174, L066, L400, L201, L240 and a few others. My primary goal is to breed and have spawned a couple types already. Most are still growing and approaching breeding age/size.

Besides groups of gold occies and similis, I have a breeding group of petrochromis sp. Red. My WC male has come into his own nicely and has been breeding with several f1 females that I grew from small juvies over the span of two years. The petro red's give me the extra hobby monies which allow me to make frog purchases. Below is a pic of my male, then a holding female, and one of two mouthfuls of fry I stripped last night.

And yes, am pretty sure watching calvus and comp's grow requires Zen-like patience. My first Tangs were inkfin calvus and they got me hooked.

Whatcha' keep, Jon? Have gotten lots of WC fish from Old World Exotic Fish in Florida the last decade. Hope to visit a fish farm or two down there some time. Wife and I went to Sanibel last year also. Beautiful area around Ft. Myers. Lucky you.
