Help identifying frog species
#1
Hi all,

After years of keeping snakes and lizards my family and I decided it was time to try something new, and purchased 2 dart frogs from a breeder at Repticon. They have a nice terrarium that was set up for us by a respectable breeder. The only issue is that I misplaced the paper stating exactly what species our two frogs are. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I've attached a photo of each. Please help if you know.

Some sort of Dendrobates tinctorius morph. top pic could be a 'yellowback' and second pic could be a 'Citronella". They both could be 'Hybrids' as well...hard to tell as they are so small, but they do not look distinct, meaning they could be crossed.

Maybe you could remember someone from the show - was it in Tampa ? and they could get you back in touch with the breeder and you could ask him more direct questions about the lineage. VERY hard to say what some species of tinctorius are just by looking at them.

Good luck.

Hi Shaun, the first one looks like a yellow back, the second a cobalt. The yellow back looks pretty standard to me, but the cobalt could be a few different things, ie dwarf cobalt, patricia, cobalt, etc. As Phil mentioned, your best bet would be to id the vendor. I'm sure someone else here could help id the vendors with darts at the show, espcially if it was someone with a lot of darts.

Thanks for your responses. I managed to identify the breeder as Under the Canopy Farms, so I sent them an email to confirm. Yellow back sounded very familiar to my wife, so we most likely have that one confirmed.

Thank you.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Shauny ,I've got concerns here, first up over the age of these little guys they seem very young, second are you aware "we", us, our hobby, doesn't mix different morphs of the same species,ie D tinctorious. If I'm speaking out of turn then you have my apologies, but if by some chance you don't know this, then it would be wrong for me not to say something.I'm hoping that you are going to pair them up with others of similar morphs at a later time, but there is a chance you don't know how our hobby is not keen on mixing morphs. I would hope this to not derail your thread, just a heads up from a guy thousands of miles away

Your post points to them being both kept together and to me they very much look like different morphs. I guess yellow back saul and citronella to me. I keep a very similar morph to yellowback called Mt Atachi bakka, the first froglet looks very close to some of our kids.
Shauny be prepared to feed these to little guys properly,as they grow they will need good quantities of food. Tincs are big eaters and they need sustained goodly quantities of food to do well,I really hope that this isn't patronising,it isn't meant to be!!
regards
