Fruit fly/isopod/& springtail culturing questions
#1
Hey everyone I want to get familiar with culturing fruit flies, isopods and springtails before I get my frogs just to be prepared.I have a few questions.

I'm not familiar with fruit flies and don't really know what species to start out with? Or should I try a couple different kinds?

Whats the best type of media to use? What to feed the flies with?

And pretty much the same question for isopods. What's the most beneficial kind? what to feed? Media?

Whats the best media to use for springtail culturing and what to feed them?

Hi Kyle,

First, I'd put a location in your profile. I assume you are from somewhere in Northern CA? That way, you can hook up here with someone local and get discounted or maybe even free flies and feeders. Local is best.

I would recommend Melanogaster for you, and not hydei which are more problematic for a new hobbyist.

media - Try 'Rapashy' - order direct from their website.

Isopods..again...try to add your location in your profile and network with local hobbyists and soon you will get all kinds of goodies and hookups.

You can even post a 'wanted ad' sometime, asking to meet local hobbyists and I'll bet some people will PM you pretty quickly.

In the meantime...here's the sortable list of members here where you can click and sort and scroll to find locations near you.

memberlist.php

also look thru this entire subforum here, to get some possibilities on local people. When you find some, PM (private message) them and introduce yourself and ask about their collection, ect.
