#1
Would a vivarium with live plants and some poison dart frogs be a good starter frog? i was wonderin if a vivarium with live plants and some poison dart frogs would be a good idea for a beginner(like me) or are there any other colourful frogs which are easier to keep?

Hi Cacoolee,
Poison Dart Frogs aren't really considered beginner frogs, unless you've spent some time researching their needs, and can make a commitment to them. PDFs need specific vivariums, lots of humidity, specific plants, and primarily fed by fruit flies, cultured by you, and dusted with specific vitamins and calcium.
It would help if you would add your location, cause if there is anyone close by, they could maybe help you. Also giving your age could help us. High school and college aged often shouldn't get PDFs, cause a 20+ year frog isn't suited to someone who will move frequently.
If you are suited for a 20+ year set of frogs and can learn what is needed, maybe PDFs are for you! If so, you need to start searching here on Dart Den for the frogs and their vivariums, their food (fruit flies), etc. PDFs can be very rewarding and fun to keep! Dart Den has tons of info on what you need to raise them successfully!
Post often, and I bet you will get lots of helpful info to help you along the way!
Good luck!

I had a 55 gal viv w Mantellas in college. They did well and survived 3 moves until my roommate decided to help save energy costs during thx giving holiday and turn off the heat. When i got back into town, my colony was decimated down to 1 frog. This was early 90s, a time when resources and hobby knowledge was in the stone ages. I think if you can master Fruit Fly cultures and got something like a 29g tank (durable and tough for moves) for a pair of Azure frogs or something, you could do it. As Diane said, its really the day in and day out commitment that you need to consider. Dart frogs don't handle neglect they way some other pets can. If your personality is one of discipline with keen attention to detail, then you should feel confident you have the potential. I spent several months re-learning and designing my first viv when i got back into the hobby.

Good luck
