Cycling water back into the misting system ?
#1
Building my own misting system and been looking around doing research. My question is what do people think about using the internal water through there misting system.

What do you mean by internal water? If you're thinking of using the water that collects in the false bottom I would say absolutely not. Its fouled by feces, bacteria, and God knows what else.

Correct ^. You want a separate clean water reservoir and to use Reverse Osmosis water (RO) in order to not foul the delicate misting parts and nozzles.

Yes but I should have went more in detail. My false bottom is a bit different it will have a 4 layer filtration system that will take out very fine participles and it will also have a live plant pit that the water will cycle through to add oxygen and nutrients back into the water.

ok..worst case, you could give it a try and take a while to gauge and assess.

Contamination is contamination. Water and waste are all washing around in a viv and 'whatcha got is whatcha got' , so no huge worry there.

The clogging of the misting parts, pump, especially nozzles and streaking the glass is what I'd be chiefly worried about.

Again, not a case of right/wrong/bad....just somethings to consider.

Thx yeah I can see what u are saying I just wasn't sure if its been tried, if it was bad, or if I should redesign.

Are you including some sort of biological filtration? What are your 4 stages of filtration?

If you want some data...I know of 10-20 people who use RO and a separate clean water reservoir.

I own a drip wall tank with 'recycled' water but do not know any other hobbyists that use recycled water.

Depending on how fine the particles are filtered there would be a potential for clogging heads and build-up of particles on glass or acrylic.
The finer the filter the better, but the finer the filter the more that filter will need to be cleaned , as it's trapping a lot of junk in viv water.

I just suck it up and spend the 39 cents a gallon for RO water at the grocery store and siphon out the dirty water in the bottom as needed. It sounds like a cool idea, kind of like how they recycle it in space, but I think it would be more work and $ on filters and maintenance than just refilling a 5 gallon jug every couple of weeks with $2 of clean water.

A decent RO filter can be had for cheap too.
