We are seeing a huge upswing in people using Facebook for business, example Dart Frog Connection.
It also seems that the Facebook venue is popular because one can adjust, delete and govern all traffic that hits their own personal Facebook page.

I think our voting here is a little bias - being on a Forum to begin with, but I absolutely see a uptick of people trying to use facebook as a primary hobby venue medium. Just an interesting observation. I still think that Forums and their innate social and informational dynamics are far superior and will continue to be so.

While I think that forums are the "bread and butter" of frog hobbyists, Facebook has it's place as well. Business are much more likely to find new, potential froggers on Facebook rather than on a forum. The exposure that Facebook provides far exceeds that which a forum can provide. Facebook serves to generate interest from potential froggers, other herp hobbyists, and the general public that has never even seen a dart frog before. Facebook is good for highlighting the plight of dart frogs, and informing the mass population about the hobby and what we're all about. The forums are THE place to go after someone is interested in dart frogs. When they want to pursue more knowledge about the frogs and get deeper into the hobby. Facebook can be looked at like a stepping stone, not a replacement to forums. I think having more facebook pages about our frogs can only expose more people to the beautiful frogs and the hobby will be better off for it. In this day and age it's probably a necessity for the hobby to grow. In any case Facebook isn't going away, and froggers will continue to post photos of their frogs and share their successes.

Agree Jon. We use Facebook here on DD, as you know , but it's for more of a supplemental thing. I think there are a lot of facebookers who are looking for 'non participation' and just want to 'read the daily newspaper' and have things regurged for them.
I think a portion of the hobby still considers posting on Forums as...too much work. Odd.

I see the hobby trending to what mainstream society is - the use and patronage of blogs or individual facebook pages for what I would term as 'one sided social or hobby activity".
A little sad. A little lazy. A lot less 'communal' or fraternal. A microcosm (get it?) of current societies' 'fast and cheap' way of information or picture dissemination. Fast Food. McDonalds. Sign of the times, I guess. I still feel the the Forum is the superior venue for information sharing for our hobby.

Lol..even at my age, when Facebook and Twitter both started, i knew they would be big. I made accounts on both when they first started. Now investing and buying stock. I'm just..not...that smart.

Everyone here is being 'safe and kind' with their answers, but seriously...there are some HUGE attempts to make facebook the mainstream venue for all things Dart Frog. I still have my doubts as to how it could 'work' or be effective other than a blog-type thing, but hey...it IS happening more and more lately.

Well, I guess when you have been uninvited to advertise on any dart frog forums due to your affiliation with Taron Langhover, Dart Frog Connection needs to pour more time and money into FB networking and marketing . What I am even more interested in is knowing who is still patronizing Dart Frog Connection after knowing Taron is a partner. Facebook markets fake friends and it only seems fitting to have DFC attempt much of it's business via that avenue. Now, if I'm missing another business that feels the need to FB as "the mainstream venue for all things darts"...they are missing out on what's important in our hobby.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

I assumed that once you are at the point to where you are not only in possession of, but also are breeding at a regular rate (those species you have decided to concentrate upon) ...those who are ready for the species or locales which take time in grade to progressively succeed with...long-term, most froggers should already know how to get ahold of you and your beauties.
At least that's what's worked for me ...and my breeding.

Facebook has its ups and downs for any vertical interest.
On the up side, you can attract a lot of traffic, expose a lot more of the general public to your interest, etc. On the down side, if you try to offer a public forum / group / community / whatever that same additional traffic is liable to bring in an increased number of spammers / trolls / griefers and other lowlives. Where a forum shines over Facebook is the ability to have "one stop shopping" of well-categorized sub-forums in a single location, rather than being scattered across a bunch of different Facebook groups each with different ownership, moderation, rule, participants, etc. The good news of course is that there isn't any reason to make it a "this vs that" thing. Everybody's allowed to use both. :mrgreen:

Wow...I'm now counting at least 10 different Facebook sites selling Dart Frogs ! Sign o' the times...Sign o' the times.

I feel it's far easier to get to know and trust people on a forum, and I've never gotten better info/advice on a Facebook page than on a forum devoted to the topic. I'm happy to PM with anyone around here, for example, but on FB I was always very wary about whom I friended, which limits one's involvement. And I don't know if it's just the populist nature of FB versus the smaller, more devoted community on forums, but as a broad generalization, I find forums have a much greater proportion of intelligent and literate users.

This question is like asking "Where do you go to research a car, to 'Consumer Reports' or the dealers car lot?" While it's true you can find a good car either way, one of those resources just can't be unbiased.
I don't use facebook for shopping unless I'm already convinced the seller is solid and I'm just looking for an online coupon code.
