Dendrobates tinctorius 'true sipaliwini'
#1
I picked up three NAIB true sips last fall. They went through QT and testing (fecals, RV, chytrid) and are doing great. They are in an 18x18x24 Zoomed. I may have posted some images of the build on another thread, but here are some images:

Enough with the vivarium...on to the inhabitants. Of the three sips, two are noticeably larger than the other. Overall they are growing quickly and very aggressive eaters. They are consistently out, a very bold frog. Here's one of the larger sips with the smaller one (I'm still debating if I have 1.2 - not too concerned yet, they still have a lot of growing left to do):

Quick update with a few cell phone shots from feeding time Smile.

I also wanted to post images of real true sips since there is now an unscrupulous mass breeder intentionally crossing tinc morphs in an attempt to create true sip lookalikes.

Turns out these guys are getting pretty aggressive with climbing and they have destroyed three plants in the viv. These shots were from the upper ledge in the viv. I'm in the process of redistributing more hearty cuttings around the viv to adapt to their more heavy footed behavior. Heh tincs are awesome.

Nice frogs and viv Jim! I'm looking forwards to seeing this one grown in too. You better watch out, those pics might get stolen :p

Heh thanks Josh! I've been having trouble getting this viv to grow in. I had to remove the Begonia bipinnatifida when the sips decided to start "perching" on it. It's pretty much been destroyed. I thought it was something I was doing with temp/humidity, but then I spotted two of them camped out on the remaining leaves yesterday so I pulled what was left

I've got a Peperomia caperata in there that they have beaten into submission. It's usually a very hearty plant for me, but in this case no fly is safe in the upper reaches of any plant Smile They will jump up on the leaves and smash them to the ground to get at any fly. The selaginella is holding up, as well as the P trinervula so I'm trying to move that around and get it going. So I suspect the look of the viv will shift over the next 6 months...

I guess we will all have to start watermarking our pics now Sad

Haha their destruction reminds me of when I was finally ready to put my Leucs in their bowfront. Hopefully you can get some of those plants to bounce back!

Here's a small video of two sips emerging from their night time hide. I've been battling them for a few months to keep them from tunneling under these river pebbles, but this marks the 3rd tunnel they've dug in the turface substrate. Despite about 3 inches of nice leaf litter in the cave at the rear of the viv and a few good cork bark hides in the upper ledge, they prefer the pebbles. There was one night after I plugged their second burrow when my wife asked "what's that clicking sound?" It was actually little bits of gravel being pushed around pinging the front glass . Who knew I would end up with burrowing tincs.

I typically give the viv a manual misting in the morning to check on everything, then I'll feed them. They hang out in their cave until I start misting, then the clown car act starts and they make their appearance. After that they are out and about exploring for the rest of the day.

The second sip out gave me a good laugh. Must have been disoriented by the lights. And don't worry, I have checked the pebbles and it's a sturdy setup that includes the edge of a horizontal cork flat. I've got a few cork flats laying around that I may use to fashion an alternate hide in the back of the viv. I will win this battle eventually.

I would agree with you. Looks like 1.2 to me as well. Nice looking frogs!

Thanks Glenn! It's hard to choose favorites, but these guys and the lorenzos are maybe a little bit out front Wink

I was wondering how your 1.2 trio of la fumee were doing? Are you still housing them together? This trio is not showing any signs of aggression yet, and they are often in close proximity like this. This group may warrant trying out a 1.2 to see how it goes. Any tips you may have are appreciated!

They are still together and breeding. Don't let them go hungry. They get bitchy! Confusedhock: Haha!

Also, don't panic if you see some aggression. It generally doesn't last long from my experiences.

Haha! Thanks for the advice. They stay well fed...and they are quite persistent hunters - no leaf is left unturned:

Caught these three courting after lights out tonight...so pic from above:
  • Left - female, she was following the male around stroking his back.
  • Center - male! caught him calling. Guess he just has terrible posture.
  • Right - still thinking runt of a male. He was hopping around the other two while they ignored him.

So it's looking more like 2.1.

Jim the one on the far right really looks like a male to me. As far as a runt goes he looks fine to me, could be younger than the other two.
I have found eggs on pothos leaves from my BYH not sure how they do it....

Thanks Beth! I was just poking fun at the one on the right since he was hopping around the other two trying to get some attention, but to no avail Smile He's likely younger and they don't pay much mind to him. Reminds me of Chester the Terrier:

Heh - I think I have names for them now - Spike and Chester. Spike to the center left, Chester lower right, lovely lady upper right. Spike was calling at the time (interestingly after the main lights went out, and only the blue lights were on):

I may have to switch to pothos - these three are the most destructive tincs I have. They have pummeled every plant I have in the viv. We'll see where they end up dropping some eggs.

I mentioned to Randall I would post some pictures of my sips viv that is doing well with Selaginella uncinata. It's starting to cascade down from the upper ledge, while growing up the cork bark vertical elements. I have also transplanted cuttings to the rear of the viv and on some of the back ledges under the main upper ledge. It holds up very well to trampling from the sips:

The original plant has been growing very well. It's the source of all the cuttings I have moved around the viv:

Here are some of the cuttings I have moved over the past few months:

And a random shot of some moss that took root on the upper ledge:

Funny video of the female sip sliding down the glass after a hop from the upper ledge. I didn't catch the leap, but she does this frequently to get down to the viv floor to hunt flies.

Quick photo of the female up on the top ledge of the viv. She hangs out up there watching us. Gotta love tincs and the big attitude.

Updated viv shot. I just love the way this peacock spike moss is growing in. It needs a bit of shaping, but it's a peaceful tank to look at:

Until a tinc goes stomping around Wink. She's starting to fill out pretty well. Boldest frog we have - she hangs out on that upper ledge watching us:

I don't post on these guys a lot but they are one of the favorites in the frog room. They are *always* out, and never shy away from inquisitive guests poking their faces right up to the glass.

Today I got a look at their first tank reared froglet bouncing around:

I've started feeding melanogaster again as the adults were mostly taking hydei and bean beetles. I find it interesting though how differently the froglet was colored compared to the adults. It seems to roost along with the adults in a cave they dug out in the Turface substrate under a cork flat.
