I found a good Humidity and Temperature Gauge

I just wanted to share that there is an alternative to going to the pet store to get your temp/humidity gauges.I got a digital gauge for temp and humidity at Wallmart for $7 and had other choices for $10, and $20 versions. I also saw others at Kmart, Home Depot, and similar stores.

The only one at the local pet store costs $30 and isn't any better than my $7 gauge.

I seen a lot of questions regarding humidity and thought Id post it here instead of answering lots of old questions with the same answer.

Here's one of the best gauges that I've ever come across. Walmart stocks em.



Caveat: A few times when I've left them INSIDE the vivarium- the high humidity sucked the life outa the battery. Other people and other testing did not result in any appreciable battery loss though so maybe it warrants more testing.

I use a dozen of these placed on my rack systems and otherwise, all around my frog room - high, medium and low, in order to give a range of temps.

I think this unit is pretty darn accurate too.

I have a Flukers unit. A few times I noticed my gauge had lost power. I thought it was a battery issue until I caught one of my Tricolor "perched" on it one afternoon. He would crawl over the power button and turn off the unit by accident.

Can anyone confirm how well they work inside a tank? I would love a second experience on this because the price is nice

I have 4 of those that have been running for a couple of years. They are the best I've used so far. I have had them in the tank for well over a month at a time, but I don't need to anymore. Everything is on autopilot now.

The gauge above is still what I recommend...although not for permanent in-tank placement.

I use them to 'spot check" tanks and entire frog rooms. I'll put one in a viv for say, 12-24 hours....check it and then note the data and remove. Repeat as needed.

I just ordered a few of these for my customers, as they need an instant read for their paint booths. I took one home to try out, and you have an accurate reading in seconds. Not cheap, but work really well.

Oh cool ! Instant readings ? Like a temperature gun, but for humidity ?

Yeah, it has a sensor on top and will read temp and humidity in seconds. I like the idea of this, as other hygrometers I have used give false readings after awhile. If you leave them in for extended periods and mist, the sensor gets coated with the water and is not accurate. I like being able to put this in and get instant results.

you should be able to buy these at wal mart.

it won't bother the frogs at all. I'd place it in the middle of the viv, as close to the 'middle' as possible. Do not spray with water, obviously.

I'd leave it in for 24 hours and take readings and then remove it. You can place it back into the viv a few times a year to get some additional readings, but soon you will be able to verify the gauge and humidity readings yourself, just by hand and eyeball.

I ordered from Amazon. I have Prime so it'll be here on Friday with free shipping. I am not friends with Wal-Mart.

That's exactly my plan, although I'm sure I'll be putting it in more like once a month at least. (I'm still a "new mom," remember!) I hand-mist the vivarium a few times a day; where the gauge would go doesn't get directly misted but it'll get damp. Should I remove it before I mist and replace afterwards?

Yeah, I would remove the gauge or mist around it somehow. you should get a real good reading if left in overnight > 10 hours.

Still one of the best Temp and Humidity gauges I have found. Anyone else have love for these?

Yep. I have that exact model and have had no issues with it yet. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
