2 female azureus ?
#1
so i believe my 'Male" azureus is a female. the only thing that looks male are the fingertips and the rest looks female to me.
The only reason i wanted a male is so that the female would not fight. Have any of you had just 2 females and have they gotten along? if i have no male will they still fight? i'm not sure if i should try to sell one of the females ( or give it away since not many people want them) and buy a new male, or if i should keep them both and give it a try.

I had two females for a few years before trading for a male. They got along just fine without a male to compete for.

Toe pad size and shape is far from conclusive as to sexual determination.

Body size is a more accurate indicator, IMO.

Try to take some profile pics of your two frogs. I thought I saw a high arched back on the one. You may be a little hasty.

They both appear to be female IMO and I've had females get along okay together. The odd battle won't harm them, but if one becomes reclusive, you may have to separate them. Odds are they should be fine though.

doggone it! Oh well. i only worry that they will fight. And if they do, i will move one out and rehome it.

And, they may not tussle at all if there is no male to fight over. Aggression between females is breeding related.

i have read that, but also i have heard of some females just being pushy and territorial, without a male. that is my fear. oh well i'll let it play out and see how it goes. i am headed to the reptile show on sunday and if there is by Chance, a proven male, i might just bring him home and set up another QT tank.

i went to the White Plains Reptile show today and altho i did not expect to find any male azureus, i found one for $50. SO if i end up with 2 females and a male, i will sell one female. if i have 2 males and a female i will just keep my eye on them and make sure nobody gets bullied. and if i end up with 3 females against all odds, i will try to see if they will all co-exist. SO here is the little cutie. he is adult size but smaller than my other 2. he also has a round belly, and not a divided belly( cleavage). i played my frog sounds cd when i got him home, and i fed him some bean beetles which i gobbled right up. it's so nice when they eat for you.

Sounds like a productive trip to the show! I would hang on to any extra females and see what happens. As Glenn mentioned you may get the odd tussle but 1.2 can work. I know he's been successful with it and I have a 1.2 lorenzo trio where both females are producing and no longer fighting after an initial sumo match. Anyhow don't be too quick to get rid of an extra female if you do end up with a 1.2. Keep us posted!

thanks! i won't know until i get them together. and i hope to get the new guy to call some evening. that would help me know for sure if he is male. it would be awesome if all 3 could live together.

Congrats on your new acquisition, Colleen!
I wanted to let you know, I got 4 azureus 2.5 years ago, and they were young (about 3 months OOW).About a year ago, I asked for help sexing them here on DD, and the consensus was 1 male, 3 females. They never fought at all, got along well. I finally separates the 2 extra females from the apparent "pair" 1 month ago, and I have 2 clutches of eggs developing now(actually 1 clutch of eggs and 2 tads). There was no aggression, the only reason I separated them was because I wanted to get tads, and it worked! The 2 "extra" females are in their own viv now, and still no aggression, they happily co-exist. I don't know if they will accept each other if I ever put the 2 extras back in with the pair, but I am definitely not worried about trying it! If I do, I will watch carefully, of course.
PS: You will have to listen very carefully to hear a male call. Azureus are super, super quiet!
Good luck!

the more i watch my frogs, the more i think i got 3 females. I won't know for sure until i get them together. since they are already adults and have never met, there might be more chance they will fight? idk. i am hoping they all get along and live happily ever after. but waiting on fecal results..still in QT.

patience. it can take weeks or over a month of direct and 'full time' observation to determine sex, social dynamic and compatibility. The big thing is to provide numerous hides and visual barriers - I like to have 2-3 hides or barriers (foliage or leaves, tank dividing hardscaping ect) per frog.

Unless there is a significant size difference, I've always had a difficult time differentiating males and females in my Azureus.
The call is quiet, the vocal sack is small, and the general size, body shape, and toe pads aren't always a dead giveaway.
My best luck has generally been with throwing in a cocohut and petri dish and seeing who I catch with their pants down.
