Mixed tanks - can it be ok ?
#1
I am wondering who out there keeps more then one species of frog in their tanks together? I have a 55g with two D. tincs and was thinking of adding some other frogs for some variety. Would this be a bad idea? If not what frogs would go good together ?

Thanks,

Mike

Welcome to the site. It has been growing so just hang in there. I know there is plenty out there that know the answer. I see you are in SA, I will be back there in about a year and a half.

thanks Mike-- nice to meet you.

Seems the main cause of debate arrises from physical aspects of stress, territory and fighting------ and if you can skirt that issue-- the fact the frogs may cross breed and create weakened strains of strong blood line species.

Looks like answer is YES.

Best bet is to mix terrestrial species with aboreal. This way you lessen the dispute for territory to a degree. Now from the advice I read,.. by chances they should be fine-- cross breeding is a viable posibility, so beware.

Carlos,

I guess cross breeding is only a problem if you let it become one. I don't really know much about which frogs live in trees and which don't. I think I am going to get a 20g and put a divider in it and keep them that way for now. I only have two D. tincs but am looking to maybe get some leucs.

Let us know if you decide to mix them.

Hi ,
Without going into the whole thing again, the easiest way to answer the question of whether or not to have a mixed species tank is this:

If you have to ask the question, you are not ready to mix species because you do not yet know enough about the frogs to pull it off. Yes you can mix certain species without problems. There are however many problems that can arise from mixing. Some of these problems are easy to fix, others are not. It is generally best to wait until you are experienced enough to know what species will hybridize, which species may add undue stress to a mixed tank. Which species may eat smaller species, ect.

So... enjoy a single species tank for a bit. There are plenty of species that are interesting enough by them selves.
I have a couple mixed species tanks going well, they do require extra attention to stay that way.

Hope this helps,

Rich,

I dont doubt I need more experience before trying to keep several different species together. Can you tell us what kind do go well together? Is there a reference out there to read up on or is most of this stuff learned from trial and error? How did you learn what did and didnt work?

Thanks for your response.

Hi Mike,

Most arboreal dendros can be kept with most ground dwellers. There are exceptions to this, but this may get to be a long winded post if I went into each possible scenario. There are as many bad as good.
There are references out there. The problem is that much of the cool reading material (books) is a bit outdated( some is very outdated in fact) and some is just in error. So ..there really is nothing better than first hand experience. Ask tons of questions and listen to tons of opinions. Some frogger's husbandry may work well for them but seem to be alien like in nature to others.

Rich,

Thanks for the response, I will have to read on which ones are ground dwellers and which are not. It sounds like the best info comes from experience. I did see a new book was coming out from a group of Germans somewhere around 12/15. This might be an up to date reference. I saw it for sale on Black Jungles website.

Thanks again,

Mike

I have a 30 gal with 4 Green and Black auratus, and three leucs, they have been together for about 7 months now, and so far no problems at all , they are all fat and healthy. I haven't had much experience with tincs, i just recently bought three citronellas, which are doing great, so im getting there, but auratus and leucs do great together in my experience.
