How Long until new Flies hatch out?
#1
I tried a culture recipe and put about 30 FF in the container. All the flies are still active and healthy looking but I am not seeing any larvae. How long should it be before I see some kind of activity? Today is the 7th day.
Thanks.

Lisa,
while it has only been 7 days, it depends on which flys you are culturing.
The D. melanogaster are the smaller flys, they usually take around 12 days to hatch. D.hydei are the larger flys and they usually take 24 days to hatch. If you have the hydei it could be a few more days before you see any larva. The larva can be difficult to see at first, they are VERY small, but they will start to crawl up the sides of the container.
Also temperature will affect their production, if they are kept cool they will take longer to hatch.

Great, I wish I knew what type of flies they were. They just came in a little tube with blue goo in the bottom and a sponge on top. The store owner had no idea what type they were. I plan on ordering some in the future if I can make this culture work. It has only been about 70 degrees in the house so maybe it is just a tad to cool to see anything yet.

Lisa,
you might try moving the culture to a warmer place in your home, laundry room, kitchen, bathroom. See if that doesn't help to jump start them. Just be careful not to get them too warm (80+degrees).
