How much Light and what kind, for a Dart Frog Tank ?
#1
Hey fellow froggers,
New to this hobby but getting closer to getting 2 very nice vivs made up for my "expectant new family". Cindy from Vivarium Concepts has been very helpful with my temp problems. These have been solved by putting new lights in the 29 gal. viv from AH supply. Now for my next problem.
I like the lights so well that I want to put them in my smaller tank (20 gal. tall). I put 2 lights in the previous tank; a (36 watt)5500K and a (36 watt)6700K combination.
Does anyone know what I should put in the 20 gal tank? It is a horizontal tank, just as it would be if it had fish in it. I would assume something smaller. What do the numbers 5500K and 6700K mean.
And yes, I should be asking AH supply these questions, but for some reason they don't answer their customers emails, otherwise I would.
Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that is the light spectrum emitted higher the kalvin number the more light spectrum is. I take it your using a life-glow and a sun-glo if so they work well. Thats about all I know JP

not going list my frogs to many; Intense collector

cindy agrees with most folks who reccomend light around 5000k-6500k.

Hi Steve,
Another thing to consider is the amount of light , not just the color spectrum. I would say that you have about twice as much wattage as needed for the vast majority of plants used in our Dart vivs. Darts are not baskers and to not sit out under a baking sun all day.
The higher the # the bluer the light. The lower the #, the yellower the light. 20, 000K will have an actinic (very blue) light, while a 4000K bulb will have a yellow cast.

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Ok, now you have me really confused!!!
My 29 gal. vertical viv is 24" from plant level to the lights. That is 2'0" away. The wattage is only 72 watts. I was told this was good by AH supply and Cindy.
In answer to my question, which spectrum of light SHOULD we as dart froggers be using? Low or high?
Thanks,
Steve

Also, AH supply final answered my email and said that a 55 watt bulb would be good for a 20 gal tank. So how could just 17 more watts be too much for a 29 gal.?

Hi Steve,
AH said that 55watts was good for what exactly?

Good for a 20 gal tall that is sitting horizontal as it would if it had fish in it, only there is no fish, just frogs and plants.

Steve,
I am saying that one watt per gal is more than enough light for Dart frogs and the plants most of us use in a Dart viv.
If you want to use two or three times the needed amount , that is up to you.
5500K-6500K works fine.
