Epipedobates Tricolor care questions
#1
I love this frog. They are beautiful, and can be kept in small groups(or so I've heard) without harassing one another, but I can't find much info on them. Are they terrestrial, or aboreal ? Do they breed easily ? Are they hard to take care of ? Anyone who has a tidbit to share, please, spill, because I really would like to know more about this amazing frog.

Hi.
tricolors are great little frogs. We are working with a group of Santa Isabel.

They do well in groups, primarily terrestrial, they can be easy to breed, however they run male heavy, females are hard to comeby. The males have a great call. These guys are the first to start calling in the morning, and they continue all day. I would highly recommend these.

I wouldn't say that they don't harass each other. Mine are crazy when they eat.

I have five froglets in a 12" cube. I will soon be moving them to an 18" cube as they get older.

That explains why you are seeing the aggresive behavior, they need more space. Even the 18 is going to be a little small for them. I have a group of 6 in a 40 gal breeder.

Alright. I've decided to go with a tank from FCA. Thats 17.5" deep 21" wide and 24" high. Hopefully that'll be plenty of room.

So whats the deal with tricolor anyway? What is with anthonyii or whatever? are they the same are they different? Does anyone know? If they are different which ones are anthonyii and which ones are tricolors? How many different types of tricolors are there? pasaje, moraspunga, highland, salvia, santa isabel,.... is that it? is there more? Its all so confusing!

Well, it's now official, the salvias and pasaje (maybe others?) are anthonyi again, and they are about to do away with Epipedebates as a genus, so we'll have to wait and see. it is also true that a lot of what was sold as salvias (coming from European imports ) are actually not salvias. I have some of Tor's E. tricolor 'salvias' via Jon Werner (same as Sean Stewart offers), and it turns out that they are E. anthonyi 'pasaje-sarayunga el oro province'. This comes straight from Tor Linbo minutes after he spoke with a leading 'tricolor' expert from Ecuador.
