Breeder's Union
#1
Any breeders out there interested in a "Breeder's Union" to discuss mutual concerns with the direction the"hobby" is moving, please contact me by email or PM.
Thanks,
Rich
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Actually Rich I think that is a great idea. There will come a time in the future when the lines will be of the upmost importance to hold true. As there seems to be many irresponsible breeders. I think some sort of database that could list breeders and the lines they carry and what generations are crossed. Sort of like the AKC for dogs etc. Each blood line of frogs could have a id number that could be referenced in this database, which would show the line previous. I'm sure this would have a little resistance in the beginning. But years down the road this would be the standard.

Hi Corey,
The "AKC" thing is being worked on (has been) and is one big part of the hobby in need of heavy discussion. Although I would not want to use the AKC as a guideline, my brother assures me he could successfully register his Jeep Cherokee through the AKC and they would be none the wiser.
Many issues now being skirted need to be addressed. Many issues being addressed need be have more involvement.
What I am looking for are breeders to convey the most important issues and/or concerns about the hobby. Lines, meds, prices, smuggling, foods, what ever . There are poles growing farther apart when it comes to some basic issues we should be in agreement upon.
I wanted to compile input off-forum to get to the "meat" of the issues of import and then post awhile down the road if there has actually been any forward movement.

Corey,

As we gather more and more information and opinions do you think it might be possible to start a FAQ about frogs? We could work on it as a group, we can have different approaches to the same question if need be. I think there is a need for much of the basic info to be in one single place. I think DartDen would be a great place for it.

Due to the recent rash of hybrid atrocities I thought I should elaborate on the idea of a "Breeder's Union".

A group would be formed with guidelines based upon general acceptance of the Dart community (hybrids are not accepted, or acceptable, by the way).
Topics such as the following ( definitely not limited to, add away please ) are in dire need of serious discussion and/or change;

HYBRIDS---the sale of, the propagation of.

"Mutant" frogs---, i.e. "spindly breeding" three eyed frogs, two legged frogs, ect. ,ect.

What to do when you buy a frog that comes back positive for a disease that is un-curable.

How high, or low, prices for Darts should "go".

Basic, standard quarantine procedure.

Basic, standard fecals.

LINEAGE

A "union" could go a long way towards "standardizing", and this "hobby" needs some standards, IN BLACK AND WHITE. You brake a union standard, you are out. That sort of thing. A long list of dos and don'ts in black and white.

So Rich, what are you looking for? There needs to be some type of database. No matter what we do,, just like the AKC,, there will be those occasional few who will take advantage of the system. I do feel we are at a point where there should be some kind of registration, basically what we have in the states now.... is mostly the genetic makeup of the future. I'm sure, and I could be wrong, that the small hobbyist as well as the few name brand breeders make up most of the sales in the US. Please flame me if I'm off cue. We need to have some kind of breeder mix for the small guys to make sure irresponsible inbreeding, as well as hybrids are prevented as much as possible. Including education to the new hobbyist. Consider that the newbies are always looking for that different color/breed not even considering the consequence. I think we should start outlining at least the beginning infrastructure of this task. Granted you might get flammed for posting something,, hmm ignorant. At least it will teach the following posts. I think if we can get a little feedback we should start a new forum on the start of this. Bottom line, there needs to be a database. Good bad or indifferent. In time this will develop into a most valuable resource with definitive structure. Again,, maybe I just had too many glasses of wine. --Corey

1. I think there should be no hybrids even if the person plans on not selling them. The risk is too great of it "getting out" into the breeding pool.

2. We have to be careful how we describe mutant frogs. I could see it getting so narrow that if my citronella is a darker yellow I can't breed it. "Mutant" would have to be specifically defined.

3. How would you prove that a frog got a disease before you got it?

4. I don't like the idea of setting prices. First off, it would lead to price gouging. If all the car companies got together for a "car makers union" and set prices for cars it would be a disaster. I'm a true capitalist and prefer supply and demand take care fo things.

5. I like the idea of setting a specific quarantine guideline, but find it un-enforcible.

6. Fecals...well, I think it would be hard to get agreement in a union on this topic currently. Better to form a union without touching this aspect and hopefully come to some conclusion later.

7. A lineage track would be great and not hard to setup.

A couple of questions to add to the mix:

1. who decides who is in it?
2. Do all members vote when someone is to be kicked out?
3. How will we revise and amend the guidelines?

Right now I just want people to think about what they believe to be important issues in need of attention.
This can be emailed or PMed to me in private, or here in public. Please give it some thought.

Josh,
It is very easy to prove that a frog I got from somebody had a disease before I got it. Quarantine. Fecal. Fecal .Fecal.There you go. How else?

Oh Yah,
I DO NOT want this to be any sort of "political" thing. I think everyone should have an equal vote. We can "chat" or whatever once a week. Vote once a month???

Another DBU thread started 6 years ago.

I just wanted to bump this thread to show that Rich didn't just pull this idea out of thin air recently.....
