Why do people Lurk ?
#41
Guys and Gals...the forums IS the place to meet people, make contacts and further both of those, by attending local meets and gatherings.

If there's one thing I can say.....from posting and therefore, "meeting" people on the forum and then in person at the meets, shows and gatherings....

THAT is the true "Gold" of the hobby. Sure, you can enjoy your animals all by yourself - like in a basement man cave, but I've had over 40 different hobbyists come over to my frog room and shoot the shit, look at the animals and it would NOT have happened if I didn't post. A no-brainer for me....but to each his own. You can't *make* people post.

Totally agree. I have met more people in the last 2yrs. than I have in the previous 10. And I mean people that I consider friends. Coming from the fish hobby where 'flipping' is common place, and there is more emphasis on quantity not quality.
I appreciate this hobby on many different levels. It has made me become more of an extrovert. I do go to local meets as well as other frogger's houses. And have had several over here, and I do enjoy praise for my hard work.
I am just getting used to the fact that others my care what I have to say...

I don't know that I "lurk", my posting frequency goes in spurts. I usually log in at breaks and lunch and by the time I get done reading, breaks over. New posts on old topics are 100% ok in my book as overall, there are really very few 100% new topics to discuss. To me the forums #1 purpose (IMO) is to educate, and if someones got a question ask. Breaks over, gotta go, see ya byeSmile.

Reading makes you informed, writing makes your precise. Its one thing to read a post, but if you engage a "rehash" topic you benefit from "thinking before writing" about your position. This is more fruitful to the person than skimming a thread in my opinion. A pedagogical value to posting vs lurking.

I lurked for about 4 months mostly researching and trying to get a feel for the various forums. I settled on DD because in my opinion it was the most inviting and tolerant of newbie questions. I read a few early topics on other forums and was discouraged / surprised / turned off by terse responses usually including the phrase "use the search function". I get it, search before you post, but at the same time, some searches don't turn up relevant posts because newbs may not know the specific hobby term (e.g. "bower" just from today!). Harsh reactions are a way to discourage the expansion of the member base.

So while I agree that folks should do what they can to post, share knowledge, and push the hobby forward, I can see the reluctance of newbs to make that first post, often expecting to get their knuckles wrapped. To those folks, I haven't seen it happen here on DD!

I use to think 'Lurking" was 80% Shyness.....but now I'm starting to think that Lurking is more laziness than shyness.

To much drama.

I don't have much frog knowledge to contribute and and my sense of humor seems to piss people off in the internet world.
I am on my good behavior here and racking up infractions elsewhere lol

Forums are not for everyone. Robust debate and argumentative discussion either.

I will proffer this though...I was the kind of person...years and years ago, that would get upset, cringe and hide from a post. Not anymore. The way I GOT THRU that was to bull my way to becoming less sensitive to the printed word of others. I can literally recommend that if you have an aversion, a phobia, an out-an-out problem or issue with posting....the way to combat and surmount that is to post OFTEN. Totally "gut" your way thru it and post and post and post, and one day, you will quite actually "break through" the other side and not care what others write. That is to say, not take anything personal.

...just my experience, but also a STRONG recommendation.

I'm reading where a lot of people say 'well, forums and public discussion just isn't my cup of tea'.

It wasn't mine either until I changed all that and started posting a LOT. I've made more professional contacts as well as good..really good friends by posting and wouldn't have it any other way. "Nothing ventured = nothing gained". It's the same philosophy as going into any given 'mixer' or gathering of people for any reason. You can elect to sit at your table and talk to no one or you begin shaking hands, telling stories and...

putting yourself out there.

I am often a lurker who will now participate lol.

Anyhow I don't know why it matters. You still get to run ads which create revenue off lurkers so the resources should not matter. In fact most forums now days seem to bomb you with more ads if you do not log in. But generally the reason people visit forums is to gather information and experience in our often busy lives and much of that can now be done without actually posting. If other people are already covering the bases then why do I need to talk? If I see a post go up and unanswered for a bit and I have a good answer I will contribute, otherwise why repeat what has already been said? There are a ton of forums this one not included where I have lurked for years without ever making an account. This is the first time I have ever seen anyone even point it out as an undesirable trait. It will take 1 of 2 things to get me to register and post, 1 and most often I have a question and need advice from experienced people (which is how I registered here on advice from a pet store employee) , 2 I see a topic in which I feel I have an interest in responding to because either I am passionate about it, or feel I can meaningfully add to it where others have been able to.

Its kind of funny but on most forums I see sort of an opposite reaction, someone comes in and posts something and the first thing they get hit with is, don't you know what Google is, or the search feature is right up there. Anyhow every person has their own angle to forums and I guess every forum admin has their own desires out of their guests. To each their own.

I'd say it's more interesting to hear a variety of opinions and descriptions of methods used, or just plain pictures of your frogs! The more variety we have the further the hobby will be advanced. Otherwise we're limited to a core set of members for contributions and our husbandry practices can stagnate. New people with new ideas push the hobby along just as much as old timers (or should I say non-newbs?) with well established methods.

I ended up here on DartDen for that specific reason. It seemed like other forums were a lot more terse with suggestions to go search, whereas the user base here would offer advice and suggest browsing certain sub-forums. Anyhow, my two cents. Welcome and I look forward to seeing your collection! (hint hint pics! Wink )

I lurk for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I don't have enough interest or education in a field to make informed posts, and will read until I have enough of a grounding to intelligently add to a discussion. I don't see the point of making spam posts which basically consist of "yeah cool!" or something as equally pointless. If, when I've used the search function, and gotten 20 pages of results which all start with a newbie asking the same question I'm asking, and the first response (or first 5 responses) are "use the search function", I'm probably not going to post, because I'm not getting any help from the forum search function OR the forum members. If there are a lot of posters who engage in snide remarks or there's a consistent derailing of threads by folks with an agenda that aren't modded out, I'm unlikely to post, because I have a high stress job and don't need the aggravation in something meant to be a rewarding hobby. It doesn't matter if it is asshats taking a piece out of me (or even other in the thread) or simply hijacking the thread so that the questions I pose never actually get addressed - what's the point? I join forums for intellectual discussion and civility, not for self-aggrandizement, schoolyard bully, or giddy fanboy behavior. If a particular forum doesn't meet my personal expectations, it won't benefit anyone for me to participate. I'll glean what I can and move on. I'm not necessarily discussing these boards in particular, just lurking in general.

And sometimes I'm simply just too busy to do much with the hobby and don't have anything constructive to add.

I think 'lurking' implies being a member of the forum for a Long period of time and not posting. If you joined only 30 days ago and have not posted, technically that could be considered -the act of 'lurking...

In creating this thread, I guess I was thinking of the people that are one here for 6-8 or more months, years even, and do not post much of anything or at all.

We were ALL newbies with no info to contribute at some point.

Then theres the 'community' aspect here in this hobby -on this forum. I belong to other forums, other hobbies that do not have it - the community aspect. We seek each other out at Reptile shows, Frog Day, gatherings...

I guess that's another reason to wish people become more than just a lurker - to join the community. That's a large way to grow, as a hobby, as well.
